Well, I should be all right. Here we go. Here we go. What is that? Nothing. And the Oscar goes to. What is it? Mickey mouse. What? Oh, my. Oh my God. Oh, wow. Oh, my fucking God! Oh my God. She isn't a cat. This is the best Oscars I've ever seen. This is the best Oscars I've ever seen. We could shun it. This is. This is. Oh, my fucking God! Oh, my fucking God! Oh my God. This is. Wow. This is the best Oscars I had ever seen. And the Oscar goes to. They played as a family. A Nora? Yes. Let's go. Phoebe. In person. No person in the history of the Academy Awards has won four Oscars for one film and one night. This is history. This is fucking history. I have never been more prouder of this fucking idiotic body. I always hate them. This is a fucking achievement. Jesus Christ. Jesus fucking Christ. It happened in North Park. North five. This does not happen. It does not happen. Who? Hoo! Oh, no! You don't pass out. Oh, no. No no no. Oh no no no no. Oh, God! Oh! Oh no no no no. Today this could be the greatest day of our lives. Before it all ends. Before they make it home. I see Oppenheimer. We don't have that. You ready? Ready? Hey, everyone. Welcome to. What are you watching? I'm Alex with third. I'm joined by my best man, Nick, though. So, how are you doing there, Honora? Oh, how the fuck are you? Let's go baby. Jesus Christ. Where we get into it? We have a friend of the pod, Dan, joining us. Dan, how are you? Was a good night for you, too. I was very intrigued and interested in your roller coaster. Yeah, but you had fun. I had an emotional investment award and one award. And what? What? It was animated feature, one flow. Whoa, whoa. Goddamn right. You bought pizza? I've been saying it for months. You. It should win. Yes, yes. I got to spit my gum out like Brody did when he got on stage. Oh, guys. Just freeze. You okay? That was. Yeah, that was a move, I liked it. What a fucking night. What? That is probably. I said it to you that I think this is my favorite Oscars ever. Like, obviously, I loved the Oppenheimer, but honor winning five, we did not predict. How the fuck are we pretty. It's it's like, I cannot believe this happened. It's what Sean Baker said. Like, this is a very special night. Last year was special for Oppenheimer. I know for you because it was your favorite movie. How much you love it? It's $100 million. But exactly. It's it's a $100 million studio movie. And it deserved all those award. Sure, sure. It showed us the best that $100 million studio movie could do. And this is a very, very special achievement for any movie, any filmmaker, particularly for Sean Baker, because he does everything. Yeah, to win all of this and for them to do exactly what he said. Champion like like her speech. Samantha. Quartet. Yeah. Samantha. Yeah, yeah. And what she said was just like, make your stories. You won't ever regret it. That is what a simple statement. But how true is exact. You make your own story, even if it doesn't make money. Like every other Sean Baker movie. Before this, they didn't make a lot of money. But you stay true to yourself. You won't regret. You will never sacrifice your own stuff. You won't regret it if you have to make movies for $6 million like this and do it. But this is what can happen. This dude's been doing this for 20 years. Skin of his teeth and I can't. The stat that I sold. Pardon me if this is false, that no human being has ever won four Oscars for the same movie in one night. Sean Baker just did that picture. Director, original screenplay and editing. I just can't believe this. How are you doing here? Yeah, I'm just here to talk about flow. I describe our behavior because you started with that. So what were we like during the show? I don't think I've ever seen you cry before. Yeah, I cried, I cried during my speech. I was on my knees and I cried. Yeah. You lost control of your legs. I did, a few times. Yeah, I'd take a knee, man. No, it was, it was being we almost neck and I was tapped out. I got out, I started jumping up and down. And then I got dizzy and and take a knee. It's more. I've always known you. Alex is a lover of film, and I just. I've never seen anyone be more passionate about some sort of like, just medium or so. Just, No, I'm trying to be real for you. Are you not? It's not a no. I appreciate this, I appreciate, no, it's just it was a very real answer. Real experience to watch. It's like when I watch. When I watch Nick watch wrestling. I don't watch wrestling with Nick. I watched Nick. Nick watch wrestling. Yeah, yeah, I watch you watch the Oscars. Yeah. And it's a very surreal moment just because it's it's I can't think of anything. I mean, I'm passionate about things, but you just take it. Just something that even connects you all your life and just very interesting watching, like, it's like your Super Bowl. It's like a WrestleMania. It is, it is, it's like, yeah, it's yeah, it's your Christmas. It's your yeah, it's Easter love Easter. And you have an an auction on. Are you having an auction on right now. God damn right. But it's But yeah, it was a very I mean, like last year, I saw you get very excited for Oppenheimer. Yeah, but this was. I didn't think that could top last year, I didn't either. Yeah. This is different. Yeah. This was more, much more emotional for me because this is an indie movie. Like this is indie, like boots on the ground indie. Oh my God, you're you're. I always knew he was. I've always known he was a very passionate person. But tonight was like, oh, wow, this guy. I think this guy really likes movies. Oh, yeah. I got that impression. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I start a podcast. I'm just exploring it right now. Obviously I was a fan of the night. Your overall thoughts on the night? I know some awards didn't go your way, but like overall, how you feeling? Shell me me I have I have an apology to make to the mad movie buffs. What is it? I've let you down. I, I, I told you all, and I promised you all that I would defeat Alex tonight in our ballots. And I fell short to get right. I don't want to talk about how many I got, right. I got one, two, three, four, five, 678. Right. Eight, eight. Well, actually, no, because I know. No, I got more. Right, because I didn't I stopped counting. Okay. Live. All right, all right. So we got I was like, did this picture that picture I had director. You didn't have actress. No, I did not have that. And everything else is correct. So I had one, two, three, 4 or 5, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Yes. So you will pick to me. You will pick Demi. I'm 18. Yep. I had a good night. Yeah. It'd be it was nuts. It became very clear. I would say within the first hour of the show where we had the same wins, but then all of a sudden I started failing and then he started winning everything. And then there came a point where I go, if he wins one more, there's no way I could ever catch up. And that happened very early. So, I'm sorry. I'm sorry to all of you. I know who you joined us in the live stream. Thank you again, by the way. Really? Live stream. Talk like the live stream. Very fun. That was so much fun. And, everyone who was there talking to us, like, that's something that, like, we so rarely get to do is interact with you in that way. And it's it's so much fun and it's so cool. So thank you for being a part of that. But I now apologizing to you because I failed you. I love that you're apologizing to them and not to me, because you talked all that shit for months. And here's how it came out. But you know what? Good night for all. Should we go through every award or show? No. Let's start with some more general stuff. How to code and do I need to go? Oh, yeah. The opening monologue was great. Yeah, Russia joke was like, he was great. Did it straight. It was like, oh, wow. Yeah. He had some zingers. Yeah, he did, he did, he did. The show was good. Like it ran a little longer. I think that needed to the James Bond thing. And then they, you know, bring Queen Latifah out. It's like we got four awards left. Let's just move it, move it, move it. The one thing I hate, they still did a few times I hate, playing off speeches. Brody deserved to get played off. He was going on a little too long. Like. Yeah, a little too long. But the other ones, when they get up there and they've been up there for 30 fucking seconds, like sound. Was it sound or visual effects? The Dune people who got screwed, they were up there for like, 30s. Yeah. And then played them off. I think it was the visual effects, cuz there were three of them. Yeah. Or it was one of the two, right? Yeah. And the poor guy stepped up to say something and then shut down. But my, my thing is that early in the night they don't cut off like any speeches typically. So for the first hour they're not cutting them off. And they have all these, I don't know, like superfluous bits that you don't need to add in. And I'm like, if you take out the fucking seven minute James Bond thing, which Dan and I were saying, I think they did a few years ago, all the ones. And they brought him live. Yeah, they brought out all the ones who were still alive. Like, why this isn't even a functioning franchise right now. We don't need that. If you do that, then you let everyone talk for longer. What's on might say different? What did is not functioning, I thought. I think they'd agree. I know they weren't. Yeah that's what this was. Yeah. But it's there. It's the thing. Yeah. They're not doing anything. James Bond is dead. Dead. Well, he did die, but, Oh, I never saw it. It's not a good movie. Spoiler. Sorry, guys, we'll cut that out. Oh, we'll cut that. Yeah, well, I'll, I'll, I'll, I will come over to your, we were talking about how we did not know if they were going to include Gene Hackman. Yeah. In the, in the morning. Yeah. Well, you went to go get his pizza, which is very nice, but Morgan Freeman actually came out on stage. I saw that he did like a speech first. So he was he was good. What I know can cut it. Well, I can't cut it. If you say it when I talk it. Well, I'm talking it was the one rule. Okay. No. Okay. And I know we were talking about talking about. Sorry. We were talking about. We didn't know if they were going to include Gene Hackman. Yeah. So they they technically started and ended with him, which, you know, that wasn't that long ago. So I'm glad they got him in there. Lynch got a big thing too. Yeah. Hackman. Hackman is a it's an ongoing shock because we still yeah we still don't know. You know yeah it's it's tough did not include Michelle Trachtenberg go. Yeah I was going to piggyback off that. Yep yep. Rest in peace Michelle Trachtenberg yeah they usually they miss a few people every year. But yeah, that was it's a bummer when they don't, you know, include people. Twitter will figure it out. Sorry for me. No X whatever. Formerly known as X. Yeah. I mean, it was a Twitter. Yeah. All right, so Nick got ten, I got 18, I want to we can go through some of them quickly. Is that okay? Like, whatever you want us visual. Nora. Nick. Nick, you still have to see flow. I know, I know, I know, I have nothing against it. I don't like cats, but that's not. But that's not. That's neither here nor there. It's a great cat. It's a great cat. Yes. Visual effects and sound we both got right. Yes. Yeah called that. Yep. Dune was going to take them. Those were the only two words Dune one which I think we both predicted I believe. Yeah. Live action short. I'm not a robot. Of the nominees I saw, that was my least favorite. I didn't I got that wrong. I said alien like, you know, the shorts are tough to call. Always. Yeah. It's tough. It's a tough bag. Short, animated in the shadow over the cypress. Okay. You know. Yeah, sure. I mean, I was I was bummed about yuck. Would have loved to see Andrew Garfield say yuck. Great title. How much risk is that, man? Have all this talk about? Oh, he just like he doesn't try. No. He is. Why I think Timmy kind of is like trying for it. Like tries the suits and everything. Garfield's like I am you. He be about. You're goddamn right about it. You just grab Goldie Hawn. Sandwich is like, I'm going to stop everything. I'm gonna say this to you. And it was good. It was. It was worthy and just. She wanted to keep going. And he's like, no, no, no, I'm not done. That's not like hanging out. Right? Probably hanging out right now. Put on his glasses. I'm taking my time with those. Damn right. Oh, love Kurt Russell is there too somewhere Kurt's like that. Kurt. Sorry. It's like I agree, buddy. Yeah. Hey, babe. Best production design. We. I believe we both called wicked. Yep. Yeah. So wicked ended up there for me. Two I think that's original song. I love that you were your heart with went with Diane Warren. But I did think Elmo was going to win that. Did you know, the thing is, is like, I really got fooled by the opening packages of the Oscars because she was being interviewed. There was actually a lot of things where she was basically saying, I would really like this one. Yeah, I mean, she gets nominated like damn near every year. But they're never for big, well known movies, but not for movies as big as Amelie. So like they need to give her a bigger movie. In regards to this though, yes, I, I think the way that it certainly probably was not the way that Amelia Perez for being nominated for 13 Academy Awards in the beginning of all this. Right. I think it showed up in one great awards for, what it won. Yeah, it got two, right? Two total. Yeah. I think those are worthy. No, I think I got another one. They got three or maybe not. I think just supporting in score in song actually. All right, all right. Yeah. Because I think I think it's earned that. I mean Zoe as we talked about before, blistering performance. Yeah. So good. She's best part of the movie and like and that is a really good song. So I'm happy for it. I'm just I just feel bad for that movie. I just feel like it just so present. Yeah. And know. So I'm glad. I'm glad something came out of it. Got some of it. Yeah. I mean the next one. This was a day of in the minute decision for me. There were two of these score and cinematography, but score. I ended up picking brutalist crazy man. You one regrettably. Yeah. No regrettably. And it did. And that that was a speech I got up there. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. But and you picked Wild Robot to win. That was it was that. No, that was that was my worst one. That was I don't know, your worst one was make up the next one. Makeup and hair. That was a bad choice for me. That was a bad. You got to go with the substance. You got to go with, like, the most. Maybe. Here's the thing. Here's the thing I did not see wicked. So okay, I know, I know, I know, I know we can all like, you know, take a shot at me for that. But. Well, I didn't realize. I thought the whole entire movie had a lot more makeup and going on. I didn't realize it was just, like. Yeah. And then when they made it up. But now there's makeup. But yeah, I turning someone green is like, heavy. But then when they were showing all the clips that it's like for her, it was just spray paint. Yeah. And I was like, oh yeah, it's not enough. It's not enough that I felt that one in the moment. I was like, ooh, I, I made a huge mistake. Job. So yeah, substance got one. Their international feature film was kind of up in the air, but I'm still here, as I predicted. Crazy. Dude. You're. Yeah, you're a fucking. I mean, listen, I gotta say, like, it was it was. It was truly something. Watching you win all of these as it was happening. I go, damn, man, it is just cleaning house. Yeah, yeah, I did my research as much as I could, but I, I don't know, I felt that some things. Yeah. I don't know what it reminded me of. What 2007, 2002 to that. I got a lot right in 2007. I'll have, you know, best film editing was the first time we flipped out, went to Sean Baker and Nora. We both predicted or I predicted conclave. Well, you two, I well, yeah. Yeah, because we thought conclave was going to show up. We did, we did. I didn't win anything. One adapter. Adapter. That was it. But I definitely thought I predicted conclave would win a strong two. But just to have one that's, you know, okay. Good good. It didn't I wish I wish they would have cut to John Lithgow more. They didn't at all. They didn't they didn't do the bit. Yeah I was hoping for a bit. I guess they thought it would be like rude. I know I wouldn't want to be that actor. Like every now and then it's like, hey, you never know when, but we're going to set the camera, do that bit again, right? The friendly face Adrien Brody would've been great pull up shooting for Adrien Brody, and we all forgot about it by then. Yeah, yeah, it would have fit, though. It would have fit. But yeah, that was. We flipped out for film editing I most like I was jumping up and down and I just I did not expected no need. We talked about it. They edited an hour and Adobe Premiere we did. Alex uses all the time. Yeah. Yeah, you use it too. Yeah. I mean it's that's what I edit the podcast on. Like that's so cool. This is, this is what I'm talking about. Like anyone can do it like you can if you work hard and have. It's exactly what Samantha Kwan said. Like, stick true to your story, you won't regret it. I agree documentary short again, last minute. Honestly, because you put it on this morning. The only girl in the orchestra I predicted to win at the last minute. You predicted incident, which is. So you put that on in the morning. Would you have voted for it? You'll never know. Oh, you signed them? No. And you know what? You still want to one. If I got that, we would not. I definitely would not have. That was. That wasn't the one that did it for me. Everybody. Documentary feature. No other land. Good speech. That was a really. Yeah. That was really good. From no other land. Why can't, you know, we need to be together, be united. I really enjoyed that. We I think we both predicted that to win. We haven't seen it, but. Yeah. Got it. Yes. Correct. Correct. Costume design. Wicked. We both predicted. Yeah, baby. Yeah, you got that one right. I got that one. That's one of my dozens of time. I said less than your ten. My decade again score and cinematography were last second score, cinematography and actor were the last ones. I was that one. You were like yelling at yourself. Yeah, okay. Sitting where I'm sitting now, this is like we went live on the live stream at 230, so we like to 2 p.m. is when I filled out the ballot and I'm sitting here. Those are my last three nights went, fuck, I'm really going to say the brutal this is going to win three. But guess what? Hey, you've won. You picked correctly. Yeah, but I mean, hey, who even knows that was okay. So that one cinematography you know whatever we category this year you know what. And and we we did say, you know, I think anyone who listens to us knows that we're not fans of the brutalist. Sure. But I do have to say the awards that it won fair. I'm not mad at them. Yeah, yeah, I'm not mad. I'm not mad. It they make sense. They do. People talk about the score, the cinematography people. Brody, as we've said so many times, is not the issue of that movie. And it's not tography. It's not either. Yeah. It's not it's I didn't think it was universally great. There were some great shots, but, you know, whatever, whatever it was not Nora though. It's not in her, which was not nominated for cinematography. And nor could you imagine that one, too. It probably would if it was nominated. Why not? It kind of told the story that way, too. Yeah, exactly. That's what I was saying on the live stream. The cinematography and the editing are characters because they are pointing you where to look. What do you got to say then isn't far enough that it wasn't five, motherfucker. Is it five enough? Sure. Never enough. Five. Five is enough for me. Five is enough. Didn't need to win anymore. I'm totally fine. I won more best animated feature. We both know I predicted the wild robot. You too. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And then. Yeah. Our beloved well ended up winning, which was great. This is what I want from the Oscars. Made up and made up for Robot Dreams being snubbed. Well, yeah, I know, I, I mean, it was a weird release because you're all my friends got released this year. Exactly, exactly. But now flow was just again they made it in blender. It's interesting. Is like what? Independent. Independent because Nora and Flo were very small. Yes, yes. This is a huge like statement. The Oscars don't really go in for this stuff that much. So yeah, flows totally independent, Nora. Totally independent. Yeah. It's I, I will say I, I work on the Dreamworks lot. I'm really curious what's going to happen tomorrow when I go to work with the Wild Robot, because it has been decked out with wild robot decor for a month. Well, sure, they I don't know. Yeah, it's all down. It's all coming down. Yeah. Coming down. And, you know, but I'm very happy that flow one I just it's just a cute I mean, it is a disaster movie, but it's got a heart, but it's like, I told Alex I'm two for two with him when I'm like, let's watch this animated film with no dialog, and it works well, this is what I was going to ask you guys, because like, I loved Robot Dreams, and that was off of the recommendation from you to him. And then when he told me, like, listen, no joke, this movie's awesome. I just watched it fairly recently and was in love with it, but I have not seen flow and I'm sure I'm going to like it because of the exact same reason. But between you two, if you had to pick between which one would you personally? Just between which one? Robot dreams and flow. Robot dreams. Same. Well, you've seen this. We've talked it over it also. It also have those last like 15 minutes, last 15 minutes and also also I will say like funny enough, my father has a is a is a was a big motivation. A big like got me introduced live music. And so his favorite group is Earth Wind and Fire. And the fact that you September over to hire me. So it's very personal with me for that song in particular. Yeah. So that's one of the songs with my wife that we have, we share. It's a great song. So I that had that, I had that emotional link to. I didn't know that about your dad. Yeah. That's awesome. Yeah. And it came disco Gay bar last night. We were. Yeah. Dancing. We were having fun. I didn't know that about either of you. And I don't have a dad, and I don't have a wife, so I just. Jesus Christ, he took that down. So I love that song. That's true. It's true. That's very, very that's like, I don't know, it was. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. I also I didn't fire someone like Kygo, Kygo. So just like I think the vibe of Robot Dreams more just because I love flow. But I feel like the just the score of Robot Dreams with Earth, Wind and Fire just makes the movie move quicker. Sure. Like, I like I love flow, but I just like the the vibe with the soundtrack of Robot Dreams. I'm with you. Yeah, they're both really good movies. The flow is like almost real time, you know, robot dreams is like passing a lot of time flows a disaster film. Yeah, disaster film. But it's a it's take you like you're on this journey. Yeah. They talk about like everyone. Like there's that. Like it's all the animals in a boat. So it's like everyone getting along from different creeds and backgrounds, getting, getting along, working together to survive, which is, you know, a metaphor for everything. Yeah. Like Noah's Ark without speaking. Yes. But it's I don't know how Noah's Ark ended up, honestly. Not really. But, they all made it. They all reproduced today. That's what happened. According to the big book, the dinosaurs, I. He left. He left them off the boat. But. Yeah. No, it's like about, you know, like species from different creeds and backgrounds getting along. So that's like, you know, that's a big was a big statement for today. But, yeah, flow is great. I recommend it. I'll watch it. You should. I'm extremely happy that one. You know, all fuck with various odds were against it. The wild robot was favored to win. But I. The Oscars can be cool sometimes. And they can do this. And they did that. I told you, I told you earlier. If I don't, if it hadn't of won the Golden Globe, I don't think I would have. That helped immensely. Like it helped get the mind started. I feel like if it won the Golden Globe, I wonder if more people decided to watch it. Well, I think it won. The golden voting came available on because voting hadn't started or ended then. No, voting is only a week and that was in like mid 50s. So what happened after Golden Globe? Correct. So they I assume that win could have boosted the view. Absolutely, absolutely. But it only came on to max like two weeks ago. But it was after the Golden Globes won saying you get that going global and you get the indie spirit when however many people are watching that. Yeah. But then it's just they're on Max. And it had prominent placement on Max, and animated movies typically do very well on streaming. So I'm it all worked. I'm glad. I'm so glad that the not so traditional animated movie The Whale and not so traditional Best Picture. No, I'm saying I know what I'm saying for both, like both independent films had one, which is yes, but I'm I'm glad the traditional movies did not win, is what I'm saying. We talked about it earlier. It's you saying the same thing, saying the same thing. He's just flipping everything I fucking say, which is what he does. Yes, it's usually a Dreamworks or Pixar. Pixar often. Very often. Yeah. They spend the most money, you know. So yeah, that's usually way go supporting actor. It's no surprise. Zoe Saldana good speech. I, I got emotional during that speech. Did you. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, she did a good job. She did. She has weathered the storm very well this whole season and you know. Yeah. No surprises. Yeah. Shit. Well, Connor's tweet joke was funny. Tweet when he. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, we wondered if. Yes. Are you going to say something? I thought Carla's little moment when they, they only cut to her once and she did kind of like the prayer hands, the camera like I'm happy to be here. And then. Yeah, that was it. Just boom, boom. I think the harp on it. Off you go. Exactly. I'll just do the other supporting. No surprise, Kieran Culkin. We all knew. Good speech. Great speech. Yeah. And and I loved Robert Downey Jr and what he said going into it. Very fun. Yeah. But honest to. Yeah. You know because Robert Downey Jr and let's face it whenever he shows up he's going to make it about him. He's going to make it about it's his show. It's his spotlight. But in doing it he was able to actually like genuinely give that praise. Yeah. Because they they bailed on doing this for best actor and best Actress. No. They were going to have the five. The thing where they bring out the five like five previous winners. Yeah. One person. It's actually what they ended up doing for the other categories. Like for even like costume. They brought out like five actors from the movie, but that was already planned and they scrapped it because of Carla. Yeah, they scrapped it and they didn't want to put that on anyone. Like, who are you going to get to talk about her for, you know, 60 to 90s and sing your praises? So that's why they scrapped it. But they handled it well. Yeah. Because you usually bring out the, the previous supporting actor to give supporting actress. And now it was just the supporting actor gave supporting actor actor Gabe actor. It was it was just a nice spin on things changing of the god. Okay. Yes. Yes it was and it was well done. Talk about a changing of the guard. Best actors who both had Demi Moore. Who the fuck one. Who the fuck one. That's right. Mikey, Madison and Nora. My favorite award of the night. I'm not going to lie, I did not expect it. I did not either. I didn't at all. Like, I can't wait to rewatch it and rewatch all the reactions. Wow, she's an Academy Award winner and Academy Award. I mean, I just I can't believe that happened. That was I really, I really wish I would have filled out one of these forms because I feel like I would have done better than Nick. You know, because I would have because I, I would have picked Mikey, I would have. Well, neither he and I didn't. We know when I said I wanted this picked wildly like. Yeah, well I don't I'm not bring you here and you want to talk that shit. Do you mean to tell? Do you mean to tell me? I think that's my favorite award of the night. Like. Oh, I mean, seriously, I just seemed very flummoxed. Well, yeah. I mean, you're you with the big bird. You're being a heavy hitter. I mean, it's Demi Moore's nominee, but, like, it's it just didn't. I mean, it wasn't clearly people like a Nora. Like. Yes. As much as we did, like, dozens of five, there were there's more. Way more than dozens. But, is she and the awards that she has one up until this point, she every time it is a bit of like a more of a soft spoken. I think she's just very, very nervous and very truly like blown away that I even happening. I it's very innocent and pure but like beautiful to watch. Yeah. It was also very nice that Sean Baker mentioned Quentin. Well I'm going to get to that. And what I was then I was going to say, because I don't know this, you guys, what did to me win it all this year. Oh yeah. The Golden Globe and the SAG. Okay. Yeah. Oh, so that's why you were unsure and the Critics Choice and she had done well. Mikey did not. Mikey won the BAFTA and Indie spirit it. So I think Demi was the odds on favorite. Really quick before we move on from Mikey. Yes. I heard a really cool story when she auditioned for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She became a like a bit of not obsessed, but she became so interested in the Manson family that creatively, she wanted to make a painting, and she drew a painting of, like, the Manson Family and like her involved in it. That was an actor who had a creative impulse and wanted to express it and show this is how much she's committing to the idea of even getting this. So all I'm saying is, is that actors be bold. Do what you want to do. If it's not even what they say you should do, be the bolder actor. Make the interesting choices. But if it's an artistic expression, it's coming for you. That's what matters. And it all pays off. Because now Mikey Madsen is an Academy Award winning man. And this goes to Sean Baker saying that if Mikey was not cast in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, no known about it. So if honestly, if she didn't express herself by making a painting, she might not have gotten that role. She's also the best of the Manson family in that film. She does the best performance. Yeah, I know how much you like Austin Butler. Sorry, man. I like Maya Hawke. She's not. She has once she has the fun thing in the back. I. And one little minute. Yeah, yeah. Oh, thanks. When you know she gets the keys, Mike it's fucking great. Yes. I mean, she gets set on fire. Of course she's got spoilers. Spoiler. Goddamn right. Great stuff. Oh, yeah. We'll talk more about what you're referencing in the, when we get to director. I thought, you know. Well, no, I mean, we got to get. We still have some, minor awards here. Minor, you little best actor. All joking aside, how do you feel? Because I know you wanted to. Me. And you love the movie. You love the performance. But how do you feel? I know, I, I like we talked about all the way up in here. Are you surprised? I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised. I though I do. I did think that Timmy had a little bit more momentum going into this particular night. I agree, I did think he was actually going to win. I did too, but I'm not unhappy at all. The Adrian won because like we've always talked about as much as we have issues with that movie, that's not it. It's not him. It's not him. And he honestly does. He he kills it. He's he's good. Everybody's an amazing. And so yes, I do love Timmy. Is Bob Dylan in this? But I, I'm, I'm not upset at all. This is not like how it was a few years ago where it was that Brendan Fraser. Austin Butler. Yeah. Butler would've won that. That would have Travis. Yeah, that would that would be a terrible what say what you're going to say. He's mouthing to me. He's why that's what he's saying is he said that to each other all the time. One of the best gifts ever made. I saw the first 20 minutes of Elvis, literally. And I'm like, I'm gonna turn it off. So those are the only 20 and then I. And then and then the Tom Hanks line, I'm like, this is the perfect time to stop it. Yeah, it is, it is, it is. It's like the performances are good. God, either does do a good job. Yeah. That movie's just I know, insane. Oh I know okay. Yes. Adrien Brody gets his. He's now in the actor two winners club. There's not too many up there. And I. He's coming for Danielle. He's coming? Yeah. I mean, it might take another 20 years because his first best actor was 2002, which was a total surprise. And he kind of referenced that in his speech. He just took a little too long. He needed that little bit, wrap it up a little bit, but said, May I ask? Yeah. I don't know who was the front runner in oh two. Oh, tell him the story. Oh, yeah. So it's a it's a whole thing. It's actually it's that is my favorite Oscar win ever. Maybe. I mean until tonight. And I got to reassess. So that was only between DL gangs in New York and Jack Nicholson about Schmidt. They had split all the precursor awards. So that meant DDL was going to win his second. So it was going to be that thing. And then I firmly believe they split the vote. And that allowed a very worthy performance in Brody. The penis was so divided. You can do exactly. You can go watch the the when Halle Berry announces it, it is everyone completely stunned, completely stunned that Brody won. But it's the thing where it was justified. He's an incredible pianist. It's. Yeah, that's one of my favorite Oscar wins ever. So what you said was your favorite Oscar speech, too? I do, I love his speech for the penis because it's clearly off the cuff. He not he didn't win. And the Iraq war is happy, too. Happy to be there. Yeah. The Iraq war just started. So he he kind of ends it. He buttons it up really well. And I think he was trying to do that here too. But it just it just went on a little, you know like kind of bring it home a little bit. There were all good words. 0202 yeah. I mean 20 plus years ago, exactly 22 yes. And I think that's what he was referencing, like that gap that you can have like in because his career didn't it was like five years old during the but maybe. Yeah I mean maybe yeah mean shallow maybe. We all know he will be back in some fashion. And I am very confident that he will eventually win in. Oh yeah. But I think he's got the for best actor particularly obviously best actress doesn't have the stigma of a best actor. If you got the looks, the pretty girlfriend or wife and you have everything going for you, they don't get. This is the Paul Newman curse, is what it's widely been known as, that he just had everything. So why do we need to give him an Oscar? He's got the wife, the good partnership. He's already good actor. He's good looking here. He has an Oscar. No he didn't. He had to win for the color of Money when he was. They gave him the fucking lifetime Achievement award Paul Newman in 1985. And then he won the next year. Yeah, for Best actor. He's like, yeah, I still have a lot more to do so that they don't that they can I don't know. We've been talking about this a lot like all weekend. The difference between best actor and actress, they've always embraced, or they haven't been shy to embrace the young as a new actress. They did it tonight, men. They just don't do that for. No, no, they really don't. Yeah. And and what we were talking about is the difference. It can be kind of confusing. Emma Stone, I just have to say, like we. Because the conversation we had about her was I personally, if I just looked at that year, I wouldn't have given her that award for la la la la. Yeah, okay. But however, since that award, her work is better, unbelievable. And her choices and her career path. So it's one of those things where if you're actually saying with the Academy Award that we're giving it to this person to actually now give a career to in that way, she's the one that's followed it the best, I think. Yes. It's like of recent. What do you think? I mean, obviously you really can't answer this question, but if she wouldn't have won for La La would Yorgos of consider. Oh, it's a good question. I don't see why not. Yeah. I mean, it was. Yeah. I mean, it was several years later and I think she had been kind of putting herself out there for more or just weirder movies. That's like her thing where she wants to produce. She produced a real pain. Like we've talked about it. I think we've talked about, I mean, I haven't told you about it on the pod, but it's like, I, I think we're all mutual agreement that Jennifer Lawrence should not have won for Silver Linings. No, I thought that at the time, like I always thought Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark 30, or even Manuel Riva for a more, which is. But that was a foreign movie. They don't usually give it to foreign performances, not often, but I always thought Chastain should have won that. But that movie was hated at the time. It was this, torture, controversial thing which was so excited. But yeah. Well, and you get like. And that is an example that kind of goes against the Emma Stone thing because, I mean, not to say that, I mean, Jennifer Lawrence is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but the her career did not go in that way of the terms of work like Emma Stone has. And neither did, Brie Larson in room. Yeah. You know, so, like, these are these women who have won these awards at young ages and the, I don't know, idea for them, they've had good careers break. Right. They've made money, but they have not followed the prestige route. Whereas Emma Stone knows how to do both. I mean, Emma Stone and Mikey Madsen had very ambitious roles and they both won back to back Oscars like Emma Stone's last year was extremely ambitious. Yes, and so was my yes. Yes this year. Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. And Mikey has been very, like vocal about how from here she only wants to choose the prestige parts, which she should like. Yeah, I love it. Do that. Yeah. Like, just don't go to, like, a comic book movie or whatever. The hell it's going to be. Stick with what it is, the work. I cannot believe she fucking won. I just cannot believe it. She can't either. Yeah, goddamn right she can. You assholes are like, who's that? Her boyfriend, that ginger. And I'm like, no, it's probably your brother. Yeah. What did you say when she got, you know, not talking me don't wrote me to that shit. That was not. You said that too. No, he said he was like he was at that fucking ginger. Yeah. I'm not cutting shit. You've racist. I'm just jealous about your twin brother. Why do you. I thought it was her boyfriend. Oh, no. She's been, pretty covert about that stuff. We don't know a lot. You really love me? I think so, but we've been following her since better things. Yeah, she was a child actor. And Pam Adlon show. Great show. She's great in it. Best original screenplay. Oh, you ever reminded me. How do we like the orchestra? Up in the air. I love you, daddy. Yeah, I loved it. Yeah, I did, I actually liked it. I thought it was a nice touch. It's. I can see it here. They're replaying it. We got the wicked song starting. The Wizard of Oz songs. So none of it was not a bad way to open. They both have great pipes, but also like it could have, I don't know, did you like the opening? Do you like the opening three songs in Conan? It's kind of like Wizard of Oz, but. But did you have an issue with her? Were you like her? Oh, no. They were nice. They were good. They usually open, you know, celebratory. It's a movie everyone loves except for me and original screenplay. We lost our minds when Nora was announced as the winner. It could have been a real pain. It could have been the substance. And it was a Nora. And I was overjoyed. I would have been okay if Eisenberg won. I thought I was like, did it could happen? He was a player. Yeah, he was playing. I like the script. Yeah, it was a good script, but it wasn't better than, I don't know. I mean, you guys know, like, did he write all of Kieran dialog or did Kieran go off cuff it. Just I'm sure dialog was written like for the character, but I'm sure Kieran looked at because you said he hasn't said in interviews he like kind of blacks out when he acts. Yeah he doesn't. He does not in it. Especially in that performance for that movie. He did not have continuity between takes. Eisenberg would be like, can you do what you did in like, I know what I did? That's what you said. Yeah, exactly. Like his character in the movie, when the guy's like, thank you so much for saying that to me. He's like, what do you say? Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So I mean, but that I know we already talked about it, but I think that was probably his best, one of his best speeches so far. This you know, Oscar. Oh yeah. He also he complimented Jeremy Strong. He did. He handled it. It wasn't as like goofy as it's been or as scattered. He seemed, you know, into his fourth. His fourth kid's story is very funny. So yeah, I mean I mean he seemed to understand the importance of the award and like this, it's a big fucking deal. You know? He's on his way to greatness. Yeah. Sorry. Couldn't help me. It was less pretentious than Downey's speech last year. Downey's speech was Downey's just Downey last year, but he was so expecting it. So getting up there and like he's just so he raises his hands up. Yeah. But he was very, thankful for his wife who, like, saved his life. So that that's what I loved about Downey. He said thank you to my veterinarian, which I loved, because that means he's referring to himself as an as an animal, which he is. Yes, yes, I imagine original screenplay. Nora. Great time, great time, you could call it, but a one. I didn't call anything. Apparently. I gotta make is this what are your worst years? This is. I think this is my worst. Showing fucking confidence. I didn't say shit. I've been laying back and been like, hey, you know, I. I take a more. There's a word. What's it? I'm trying to think of it. Oh, humility. Humbleness. I try to take that in. Daniel, this one over here to my right. He just announces early on, I'm fucking beaten you. You're shit. Go big or go home. You. Yeah. You're going to go and buy this thing? Yeah. If you're going big, then you have to own it when you go home. I'm owning it. He is owning it. I'm owning. I'm. I just say one thing. Two months. I said you're undefeated. Yeah, and I don't care about being undefeated I did. What do you want me to say? I am king? You can come, call me King. You can cut this out. I wouldn't cut it out. Adapted screenplay. Dan. Love this one. Conclave one. He was really, really did I did, I did I would, I would have picked it up if I had a ballot. All joking aside, you know, we were. That was the movie conclave. I think we were conclave. That was the movie we were most nervous about. One win. Yeah. Amen. I'll take it, you know. Yeah. No picture. Yeah, but you would have been fine. If Ray finds one, you'd have been fine with it. That would be cool. Yeah. I speculated that they could split the vote. Yeah, Cody and Timmy and he could sneak in. It just. It's weird that we've talked, Nick and I've talked about this a lot that know of all the conclave buzz. And there was some buzz. None of that trickled down to him now. Like, what is it going to take for this amazing actor to win a fucking Oscar? I don't know, his third Oscar. That was weird because Conan said it's his third nomination, but he's only been nominated twice. I'm not going to and I don't judge your knowledge. And then the I mixed up the other thing, but it sounded like he said, Dune two has been nominated for picture and director. But I guess the way it's a comment, the way I heard it, it was Dune two nominated for Best Picture director Danny. That's how weird it. Yeah, but but it's sound, but I agree. Yeah, I think you're right. It was weirdly worded. I in the beginning I was looking at you guys and I'm like, he's getting some Oscar stats wrong. This is weird. But you know, I mean, whatever, but when how hard it would be the writers I know, but how hard is that to figure out? Apparently they don't even watch their own movies. So grapevines got nominated for supporting actor for Schindler's List, and then that's that's it. All you need is ChatGPT. That's it? Yeah. Got it. They should let me host this thing. I'd be fucking great. Best director I really I mean, we were nervous because at this point he's one two and I was like, could it be the brutalist I don't know. And then Tarantino just opens it and says, doesn't say his name says and Nora, which I love. And then one of the first things Sean Baker says is what Nick has already reference. I would not have known about Mikey had it not been for once, but it was very nice. Yeah, because she didn't have to audition for a Nora. That's how she really know you saw her in Hollywood and then in scream five, and when he was walking out of scream five with his wife, slash producer Samantha Kwan, he said, get in touch with her agency right away. She's my Nora. And they did that the next day and they didn't. Nora wasn't like, hey, we're filming in like two weeks. She prepped it for a year. So it was it was a year all in, I know. Tell me we're on five years. Oh, sorry, I didn't win. That's me. Five fight, but not exclusively. Mikey worked on an exclusive three year. It's like Bradley Cooper and Mike did too. What about it? He did six years of work. Yeah, good. It's been six years trying to orchestrate for six minutes. Right. So that Cooper in my stride. So that's what I'm saying. Like it's like that's like the best scene of the movie. The orchestra seated. I was talking about of the pod and I'm saying it. And then I say to Nick and he's like, I'm not gonna lie, I totally checked out. I absolutely did look at Cooper's like a sweaty mess. Like, did you ever see that movie? No, I got that movie's not good. Not a meme is not good at all. But, I mean, how good was Sean Baker when in director, man? Very humble. Like. Yeah, very. All the speeches were good the last minute. Like, what else can I say? Yeah. I'm just like, I'm out of stuff to set. Yeah, but you said great things for all of them, like you talked about why editing was important to him and then the director talking. That's when he had this, like, written down. And he really wanted to get the the movie theater thing, which is like fucking arm end and say that all the time. And this part and also his speech at the Indie Spirit Awards was also another like absolute rah rah that was a showstopper. Yeah, that was probably the best of all of the speeches, to be honest, because he talks about just how the lack of ability in funds for indie filmmakers to make indie film, and it's just kind of like it's not exactly like a cry for help, but more of a battle cry, a battle cry, like, because we he doesn't have 6 million. We need someone to like. It doesn't have to be neon, but like, so, you know, just help us out here. Like, give us a little money to, like, make these good movies. This is an important art form. Yeah. No one talks like this anymore. We need people talking like this. Yeah, very, very true. And so if you kind of take back like his speech for tonight with best director in that in this, Spirit Award speech, you're looking at a true independent artist that is fighting and trying to use whatever platform he can to vocalize that, hey, go after what you want, but, like, also like, like in this, in this. Help us out. Like, like. Yeah. It can't just be this. Like we can't just create because we not all creatives have money. A lot of us don't like most don't. Yeah. So help us out. And then his wife Samantha can sing. Stay true. That is, that's like you stay true to yourself, but then also keep fighting and try to make. I'm telling you, go watch Sean Baker stuff take out. It's like a $3,000 movie. It's own criterion. It's about a guy, like delivering Chinese food. It's. It's so good. Like, yeah, he's been doing it and grinding. I think a lot of people first heard about him with Tangerine. He was one of the first ones to embrace the iPhone movie, but he's always done that, embrace this new technology, but then stayed true to himself. And his best film is Nora, and it fucking won five Oscars. It's amazing and it's pure cinema. It's pure, absolute cinema from start to finish. Best picture, our final award went to Nora. Harry and Sally announced it and I just I couldn't believe it. Like, I mean, it would have been really weird if it didn't win that if we got all the way to the end, if that would've been a bummer. Like what? But Warren Beatty presenting awards. But, la la la la la la. Let's go. Dudes, just calm down once. Cool. Yeah. Moonlight. It's you. We didn't win. It's you. Oh, God. That's like we didn't win, by the way. Yeah, I got, so awkward. We had eight different. I got 18, you at ten, but we at you have all of our choices. We had eight different total awards. We had a Nora winning five. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that would be a possibility. Again. I don't know if I think this is a true statement, but tonight, Sean Baker became the first person to win four Oscars for one movie. Yeah, what a fucking stat for a $6 million movie. Yeah, Nolan didn't even win screenplay last year. American Fiction won it. Like, this is crazy, man. Like, this shit is nuts. And it's all. I mean, it's not just him, but I mean, these were like, yeah, he edited it. Yeah. I mean, he wrote it. He directed it. Yeah. He his early movies, he shot them too. Like he's, he cast to the door. He's the cast. He shot this one too. He didn't know Drew Daniels did. Oh okay. Yeah. Yes yes yes yes yes okay. You did waves the guy the same cinematographer that that's why it looks so fucking goddamn right it does. It looks amazing on a project. It might have been Drew Daniels. Still, it might have been him. The same guy I don't want to follow really helped him because, like, it was the biggest thing he's had. But that Willem Dafoe has always been like that. He did the same thing with Eggers, like he saw the witch and he's like, gets in touch with him and goes, I need to be in your next. So I was he did. Yeah. He saw Tangerine and he saw Scarlett and was like, let's do it. Like, let's get get me in the next thing. And then, you know, that's that is not a flashy Willem Dafoe performance. The manager. No, he's fucking amazing. Yeah. But there's nothing like no, it's not nice for us to, you know, just. Oh yeah, it's great that Willem Dafoe really sees greatness in people. He always has. And he. Yeah. And he seeks it out and he wants to people. There are some really good actors, especially in his generation, who do that, who will, you know, the the young director or something like they'll be in the movie to lend a name and yeah, that absolutely helps. I don't know if he I don't know if he would have. I mean, this is me guessing Uno if Sean Baker would be here if it wasn't for Willem Dafoe. Because it's a fair statement. Maybe not. Yeah. Maybe not. Willem Dafoe got nominated. That was the first time Sean Baker movie had been nominated for an Oscar. Yeah. Willem Dafoe is just so fascinating to listen, talk about exactly this type of thing, because he is in big movies, you know? But when it comes to things like this, he is exactly right. He actually seeks these things out, and he knows he's getting himself into a situation where there isn't a trailer, there isn't all this. He's he's getting paid the most minimum that you can get and all this net. But he looks at himself. This is what I love, that he says he's an explorer. Exactly. It's like he should not be about money, man. Yeah, it's like he finds these artists, these directors that have a vision. And he goes, I want to see what we could do together. Let's make some fucking art. Yeah, yeah. And he doesn't know what he's going to do. How do you. Yeah, you can't exactly. But you, you you're more curious to take that dive to go there and then see what comes out of it. And it's just, it's beautiful to watch. So any any Willem Dafoe is just, like, weirdly underrated I think so. Well, that was his first no. Did he get nominated for platoon? He might have, but, I think him and Baron did. And then Florida Project and that's it. You just look at his career. Yeah, that's one where you're like, what even rate. You're like what? Like no Oscar here. Like, What? Yeah, there's a lot like that. They're taken for granted. They're just taken for granted. And they never gotten that showstopping. You know, like he got Dafoe got nominated for playing. Was it Van Gogh in the movie? Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's not like a big movie, but they just don't because I think they're, you know, want to team up with these lesser known directors. Those aren't necessarily the flashiest roles. So you're not like getting in there. But I yeah he's I love him. I've always I feel like every year he's in like at least one movie that he's trying to champion. Yeah. Even Nosferatu like he's an Eggers guy. So he's trying to, you know, lend some credibility to the kinds of kindness. Oh, fuck. Yeah, man, he's so good in that. God, I love him in that. This was a great night. How? I mean, I think I like this night better than last year. How do you feel compared to last year? Well, I mean, I definitely didn't do as well, but if I'm looking at the. Yes, yes, and no, I, I really I it's, it's very inspiring to see the biggest night in four movies is tonight and to see a Nora which personally is our favorite movie. Well, Dan or Alex and I, I know Dan liked it. It was good. It was good, I liked it, I don't know, I did, I did it, but no, no, no, you know, I'm just giving you shit. But, to see a movie that actually is independently championship it it makes you feel good in a time where the industry is very unknown and it's sort of there always is like in our situation, it's sort of like how the hell are we actually going to get this stuff done? Yeah, yeah. And, you know, the thing is, it's like, even if a Nora didn't win, this wouldn't stop us from doing that. But seeing something like this for independent filmmakers is something where it's sort of like, okay, it's not dead. It's not like it's not. And it's and it's possible. It takes work and it takes a lot of things. But this is exactly what's needed in today's time. I agree. Like like Oppenheimer, we talked about it like last year, like Oppenheimer is $100 million studio picture. You got Nolan. And it's also changing the cinema, like the art form. That's what Oppenheimer is. This is a movie that was boots on the ground. Just tell anted people working together and creating the best that they possibly could. And when you have really good people behind you and you're all in it for the vision, you get great things out of it. And I now I'm in a tough position because it's a past time to give the Oscar shit. And two years in a row they've done really well. And I mean, these are the best, like years, that since I've been watching these, like, for me personally. But two years in a row, my favorite movie the years won Best picture. Never in my life has that ever happened. Once, until last year. So what's going on? I don't know, but here's to 2025. Yeah, here's the 2025. We'll see what they do. Probably fuck it up. But, hey, I like where we're at. This is a really fun night. I couldn't believe it. Got some more champagne drink here. I might just watch it again. Put the whole show on and watch again. This is a great time, Dan. Thanks for being here. I'm glad. Flo one, I really am. Thank you for having me. Yeah, yeah, it was fun.
