Hey, everyone. Welcome to. What are you watching? I'm Alex Withrow and Nick is here for this one. Don't you worry. He better be. This was his idea. Happy holidays. Today we present you with the Manchester by the sea commentary. Nick has wanted to cover this movie for a long time. It's a movie that means a lot to the both of us, and we thought it would be amusing to do a commentary for it, as opposed to a deep dive. Nick and I saw this film for the first time together the weekend that it opened. You're going to hear all about the relationship we've each had with the film since. But needless to say, this is a film that understands pain very, very well. We appreciate it for that. But it's also, you know, funny, like really funny at times. So it's a movie that understands the other side of pain as well, and we appreciate it for that as well. Now, I didn't notice that the timing of the production studio logos are a bit different if you are streaming it on Amazon, which I imagine most people will. Or you're watching the Blu ray, which we did when we recorded this. So if you are going to follow along with us, the beep this time matches perfectly with that k dot media logo. In the beginning, when you see K hit play. Here we go in three, two, one. K period media. This one's been a long time coming. This is the one we go to for. Oh this is the one that we go to heaven for. We have teased this one a bit. We're going to get into why we are doing a Manchester by the sea commentary. All will be revealed and clear as we go. But, this is bit a bit of a white whale commentary. We've been teasing it a lot and I'm very, very excited to be here. I want people to just hang on because we get a lot of things out of this movie that I don't think a lot of people do, and I think that's okay. That's more than okay, because I love this movie with all my heart. This is a comfort movie for me. You have said that on the pod before. That is, very interesting. I would love to hear more about that as we go. Here it is. Bring in the water. Bring in the music. I don't like, I don't like. It's not that. It's. It's bad music. I don't like this music. So that is a huge part of Kenneth Lonergan. You either. It's not like you have to like classical music. But if you are not on board with it, he is using it a lot. I rewatched You Can Count On Me first time watching it with his commentary, rewatched Margaret the his director's cut for the first time in, since 2011. He doesn't do a commentary for that, but classical music everywhere. Everywhere. So you have to be on board with that and understand how much it means to him. But yeah, it's a very different vibe for a modern movie. There's, you know, no pop music. No, there, you know, there can be score on occasion, but he's mostly relying on classical music. Yeah. Hey, and that's your thing. You got to do it. You're the filmmaker. You got to. You got to go with what moves you. Own it. Yeah, exactly. Claudia Marie, baby. Yeah, sure. Nice little. Yeah. We're starting out with a nice little, like, moment between them before things get dark. I just want to say that the first time we saw this film was the opening weekend. Opening day? I don't remember at the Arclight in Los Angeles, December 2016. I did not know what this was about. I don't think you really did either. I, you know, don't watch trailers or anything. And I just want to say that this is a supremely odd film to watch. For months after your older brothers died by suicide, it was I mean, yeah, we're going to go there in this commentary. We're also going to laugh a lot because you and I do I mean, it's a movie. Yes. Yeah. And we're two people who have like been through it. A lot of people have been through it in one degree or another. And I don't know, I'm not trying to speak for everyone but you. I think you kind of find the humor in some of this stuff. I think that's what he's saying to us here, that there is some just absurdity, some humor in life. And he decided to do it. Leave it all in. Not all of it. He decided to leave a lot of it in. That is intentional. I've always I don't, I will I've not always done this, but I've said this for a while now in my real life, is that I just don't believe that everything in life is just one thing. Of course. Yes, it may feel like that in the moment, and maybe there is time where you do need to like, like sit with certain things. But like, like at a funeral and everything is really awful. But then someone farts. Well and, and then all of a sudden it's like, like two things can happen at the same time. Yeah. I made everyone laugh really hard when I gave my mom's eulogy. I mean, I just did because I was telling stories about her. She was hilarious at times. Yeah. It doesn't it does not have to all be like one thing. And that's a lot of what this is about. I think that's exactly what this movie is. And I think there's, I think the people that kind of know that there is humor in tragedy and tragedy and humor, that this is what a lot of what this movie's actually about. But I think my, the only thing that I remember really about this movie before it happened was, well, Kenneth Lonergan, I'm very familiar with because he's a very, renowned playwright. Yes. But I mean, what is this? Is are you. This is our youth. That's got to be one of the most put on plays of the last 20 and feels it's kind of like a, like a stepping stone sometimes for young actors and like, all right, we're going to put this on. Yeah. We're going to do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Lucas Hedges did it. Lucas Hedges did it. I, I had to rough low, maybe. Oh, I think he started it. Sure. Okay. Okay. Yeah. And I and, I saw a production in New York with Michael Sierra and, Kieran Culkin. Good. Here. It was good. Okay. Well, Michael Serra is, like, pretty much. I forget the name. I forget the character's names, but there's three characters, two friends. One's a bit of, strong bully. Yeah, and the other one's a little bit more of, like, a, He's the main guy. I kind of wish I remember their names, but, Michael Serra played the main guy and Kieran Culkin played the the strong guy, which is in the text. He makes reference to how much bigger he is. Yeah, but Kieran Culkin and Michael Sierra are like the same size, right? Right. And I wouldn't necessarily say that Kieran Culkin is a very imposing, like sure thing, but, but he used his intelligence as as his weapon. Yeah. And he carried himself in a certain way that he just exuded superiority over the other guy in such a cool and fascinating way. I loved watching that in the words. Can do that. Yes, the text can do that. That he's. Yeah. Yeah. So I love that, I love that I also, you know, we're getting to meet Casey here, Casey Affleck and I just love the routine of, you know, he's this a landlord. He's more like just this janitor, this handyman around this apartment complex. And, you know, right now we have the volume low. But this woman that he's helping is kind of like saying into the phone, like my my landlord or my cleaning guy's so hot, and, you know, she's kind of like putting it out there. And this is maybe the first instance of, like, the shutdown within him, that he doesn't even allow any of this in. It's going to become so much clear later. I mean, he's about to be blatantly hit on in a bar by a woman. It's like, that's okay. And there's just there, as we will learn, there's nothing there. And no, I can't beat it. And that's this. That is this stasis that this guy lives in. One of the things I think is so powerful about this movie is I don't know how much this guy changes throughout the course of this movie. He kind of ends where he begins. And yet it is an immensely strong performance. He won Best Actor. Rightly so. Yeah, it was close. It was him and Denzel for fences. That's who it was up against. And he won. I'm very happy he won. And yeah, this is one of the best. Portrayals of genuine depression that I've ever seen. Not the type of depression where you can't get out of bed. It's not that. It's just this emotional states of this thing I've done and not being able to beat it, not being able to get past it. Oh, this is going to be like one of the best scenes. Well, yeah. This is the first time we see him kind of pop off and he doesn't put up with any shit. And like I, I don't care about you, lady. And yeah. And I love it because he's literally just explaining the problem. Yeah. Yeah. Very like, none of this matters. And he doesn't even look like he's about to snap either, right? Like there's no fuze here. Like, I like how he plays that. Like, they're like, any other actor could let this start to build, right? He's about to do in the bar when he goes up to the guy and he's like, do you know me? Yeah, yeah. Like even right here. Look at him. Like he's just sort of like, I guess we're gonna have to do that. And our armor is offering a solution, right? The sarcasm. And then he's just going to start cursing. Yep. So. Great. Oh my God. And yeah, it's a great way to because we don't know what the hell this guy's deal is. This is that. Don't give a fuck what you do, lady. He is. He could be so expertly dismissive. Casey, I like it. I love him. I love that line. Like, oh, I, I didn't I didn't like that. I didn't like that at all. Lee Chandler Lee I love that their, surname is Chandler. Yeah. Kyle Chandler is the actor's name. That's great. It sure is. It sure is it sure, sure is. Astounding production design. I just see the audience are audiences. I have seen literal stuff like this in, you know, just guys who have these jobs. And this is this is their desk. This is what they live in. Yeah, I love this. I'm sorry. I can't remember his name off the top of my head, but I love this guy. He's so good. He was in fences, too, as well, I believe. That's right. I think he's like denzel's right hand fences. Yeah, I love how good your frame file cabinet is. Just wide open. Yeah, and there ain't no getting in there. No, no. Oh my God. You know, and, I understand that there's, my, my script consultant actually has a she she hates this movie. Okay. With with honestly, I, I don't blame her. She's 100% right. It's kind of what you were saying. Like, I don't know if this guy ever changes. Yeah. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, but what this movie does do that she doesn't like, and I can't say that she's wrong. Is that it? The whole entire time presents itself in a certain structure where he would change. Yeah. This is not it is a little bit of a narrative trick. It's. Yes. And, and and it is one of those things where if you are going by that measure, it's like, okay, you're giving us every moment in beat where like, this is what happens next and you don't do it. I think there are a lot of people in this audience of this movie that when it ends, they do feel a bit like, let down, let this fuck, this is what it is like. It just goes back. I mean, that's why the the most important words of this movie in of the script are, I can't beat it like that. And when when he goes off and makes all those arrangements, we don't even hear him doing that. You know, he goes to his friend's house, a neighbor's house, and then what? He's telling Lucas Hedges at that table, he's like, they're going to adopt you. Like he's done all this to completely remove himself from the situation, which is clearly not what his brother wanted. His brother was trying to set it up so that he could become part of, you know, society again. And yeah, he rejects that. And that, I imagine, is very frustrating for some people, especially some people who may have felt like Lee at a time or two in their life for any number of reasons, for any number of reasons you want. We all want to be able to get out of this. We all want to be able. We all want to be able to beat it. Whatever it is. He can't. He doesn't, does he? Later, I don't know. That's not the that's not what the movie's parsing. Movie's parsing like just right here. Now, this is how one person is dealing with horrendous grief and what he ultimately ends up doing is, is like he he shows up for others. He does not show up for himself. I think I mean, he does in a way like he, he keeps going. He doesn't he doesn't like an end it, but he has a brief, a very like, brief moment of suicidal ideation, which is an astoundingly intense, intense scene. But then I love that it it makes it clear that that's not where he lives all the time. That was in the immediate aftermath of this terrible thing that he, like it or not, whether it was an accident or not, he did cause it. Yeah. And yeah, he has this brief flash, but then that's it doesn't become a movie about like him in, like, a hospital getting treatment. No, it's just not. He's got a very, like, blue collar. I'm figuring it out on my own. And now I'm just going to go pick a fight with these two dudes because I. I don't know, it'll help them feel something. Well, I think I think for a lot of I think it's a very, very kind of masculine situation here where he cannot get out any emotion and, anger. Yeah. He just turned the woman down who, like, had her friend bump into her, spilled a beer on him, and he does not he does not engage at all. Then you just sees these two kind of casually looking at him. I don't think they have any idea who he is. And he's, you know, just going up and being this is a bit of a routine. We'll see him get into. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, it's probably the only real outlet that he has. And because he's so angry at himself. Yeah. But instead of really dealing with that, I mean, it makes sense that it would lash out in violence like this. And I don't think I think he doesn't care if he gets hit either. No, not at all. Not at all. Sort of like. Yeah, it's like hurt me. Yeah. I'll just go pass out of my shitty basement apartment. Yeah. Same apartment that he has. Yeah. That Kyle Chandler moved him into. So I think that's very important. You know, we gotta go. We gotta get some furniture. Like, I didn't didn't get much. I think one of the reasons why I find this to be a comfort movie is like, I, I really have always liked characters that are just. Flawed. They're flawed. Yes, but. But. Yes. And who doesn't like that? But like, these really closed off like loners in a way. Like, even though he's not like a truck driver, like on the open road, just doing nothing, but he has isolated himself from his whole entire world. And, I always kind of, like, connected with that idea. I've never really, like, gone off away from the world in that way, but I, I appreciate stories about people that have. I don't think this guy has either. I think he has. He had responsibilities. He had a wife. He had children. Yeah. He had all that stuff. So yeah, I, I love that loner mentality. And I love this early time with him not knowing why we are with him. What's going on? We're about to get a little insight now. Oh we don't find out for a long time. Well yeah, we find out his brother, you know, sick and all that. Oh, well, yeah, we find that out. Yeah, but we just don't know who this guy is or what story this is yet. And I love that it takes, you know, takes its time. Kind of revealing that. And yet just seeing the emotion play off him. And he's. And these are how these phone calls go. Oh yeah. Like oh yes. It's it's just okay. All right. Well, what needs to happen. Yeah. Don't do that to this. Yeah. I'm on my way. Yeah. And this is, this is always. And the reminds me of my uncle. Uncle? Who? I basically kind of wrote my first script around, it he he's been a caretaker for his last 25 years of his life, and, you know, and these are the types of not I mean, not to this level, but I mean, phone calls about having to do things. It's like, okay, make these decisions, do this, don't do that. I'll be here at this time. So I think there's a part of me that also really kind of connects with my uncle with, even though the circumstances are not the same whatsoever. There's something about this guy's, duty, that he has in that he, that he puts himself into whether he wants to do it or not, and, and handles. Yeah. Yeah. Because ultimately he really does. Like, he does not drop the ball throughout this whole entire movie in terms of he, he doesn't know what to do. Well, yeah. He's not handling it with kid gloves. He's handling it with a fucking, what's the thing that destroys buildings most by wrecking ball a wrecking ball? Yeah. He's handled like a wrecking ball area is. That's what he's doing. But he doesn't know any other way. I love driving shots. It takes. Oh, I know, just to show the distance in the space. You know, I for the longest time thought, the lyrics to Wrecking Ball were I came in like a rainbow. The name of the song is right, I know, and I, and I also didn't understand the music video because she'd come in on a wrecking ball and I'd be like, where the hell is the rainbow? You could at this could have solved. This could have been solved if you watched the music video once with closed captions. It was a music video with closed caption just once. Just once. So you get all the lyrics. But I didn't think I was wrong. I was just like, of course, now I'm. Of course you didn't. I came in like a just like Lee channel. You don't ever think you're wrong. Oh, great. Look. Oh, great. On this face. Yeah, it's a movie, really. Just a small town like vibe, right? Everyone kind of knows each other or not. Everyone's heard of him. But like, a lot of people have, and, you know, they know what's gone down. They know the. Yeah, what he's done. That's the other part of this movie that I love is like these small towns, like everyone does know everybody. I grew up in one. You kind of grew up in one ish. I mean, Buffalo, a big town, but I don't know, I grew up in a very like a suburb of DC that was far away. But there there was 750 people in the damn town. Yeah, yeah, I, I can't really relate. Buffalo like the town that I grew up in could be like that. But you didn't know everybody. I didn't know if you were, like, in a specific, like, suburb pocket of Buffalo or something. No, you were city boy. It was a little bit of both because I went to school in the suburbs, but we because we put our address down illegally there so I could go there. Sure. We lived in the city in the beginning, and then we moved into some of these areas, but even still, they were big enough to where, you didn't know who whose apartments or houses these all were? Yeah. Well, I can relate to it, because everyone is in everyone's business, and there's no. This is before social media. This is before cell phones, you know, and everyone just knew what was up. And if something had gone down a few years ago, it just it wouldn't make its way around town. That person would know affairs, stuff like that. Yeah, absolutely. And I can't. I could never live like that. I that's why I got out as soon as I could. I couldn't even imagine. I know, because like, I remember there was I was driving across the country, we were driving to the south and we we specifically chose to kind of drive through some of, like these no name towns. Sure, sure. And, I just remember, like, driving by these places and I'd be like, wow, look at this. This is the only plaza that this town has. It's got a dentist office, one supermarket, and it's not even a supermarket. It's just a market. It's a mart. It's a mart. That's where you go. That's where they go. And and I'm like, and there's one bar and you know that this is where everybody goes I'm right. Yeah. And I'm like, how does anyone do like I don't think I could I could not live with everyone knowing exactly what I never could that. No absolutely not. Absolutely. So yeah, I mean there are there are so many towns like this. And I love that this is set and filming this place Manchester by the sea, a place I've never, I never heard of before this movie. And it absolutely exists. But it's not Boston, it's not Gloucester, it's not these big places. It's more of, you know, and when we should talk about maybe it's a good time now to talk about this had a really unique development to getting to the screen because Matt Damon and John Krasinski became friends and they pitched the idea to Lonergan, they acknowledged, like, we don't think we can write this, but we have this idea of this handyman who's in terrible grief. And they kind of they had like the threads of it and said, we don't care where you said it. I think they had we're going to call it Manchester by the Sea Horse. And then he goes, no, that's perfect. You get this small town and then the water and seasons change like you can, you can look so appropriately cold, but then you really feel when the seasons change. So he goes off. Lonergan does and writes it. And as soon as Damon reads it he goes, okay, I think we'd like you to direct now, Kenneth Lonergan. And then Damon's going to star. Yeah, that's the deal. Then Damon gets way too busy with acting roles, and he essentially gives the role to Casey Affleck. And he's like, I want you to do this. If there's one actor I would give up a role for and that's you. So here you go. And then that's how we get the film. We get Krasinski's an executive producer. Damon is a producer. So it was that's the creation of it. And I really like that. It also posits a very interesting question. Damon, in this role. Yeah. What do you think I will I think Damon can do anything. Yeah. There is it. Does he win Best Actor for it? Oh, yeah. So right. I mean, maybe though maybe I mean, maybe there's no way that if Damon had this role, he wouldn't knock it right out of the park. It's not like he would fumble it. Not at all. But it would be different. I don't know, I mean, he has introspection in that tournament, but I don't know if he has the amount that Casey Affleck does or the the kind of fuck you cynicism. And, you know, I, I don't know, but we love Damon. Of course. Oh, yeah. It's just an interesting, you know, thing to think about. And this is always the coolest thing about actors is just like, there's just certain qualities that we as individual humans possess that just they, we wear them differently. And sometimes those just translate on camera better. It's not even necessarily who's a better actor. It's just sort of like, oh, you have sad eyes. Which is why, yes, yes. I think that's what Damon realized. Yeah. Oh, also being busy, but I think it's like you're perfect for this man. Like you are this guy like it? Yeah, yeah. There's an essence to you. Yep. And that's always been something because it's like, yeah, any actor could play sad and Damon I absolutely. But I wouldn't say Matt Damon has set eyes, but I would say Casey Affleck does. Yeah. Yeah. And and that's just one of those things where it's like, okay. Yeah, that just looks right. It does. We just got our first significant editing jump. You like without warning. It's gonna start doing this a lot. But we're jumping back and again not nothing's really being explained to us. We're like, we're just in a scene and we have to follow along with the scene. Okay, this is the brother who just died, right? This is the troubled wife. And, you know, yeah, we're putting all this stuff together and meeting new characters, and I love that. And she's basically telling him that, he has a very limited time left to live. Yeah. And the way he handles it. Kyle Chandler, let's let's let's talk about him. I, I adore this man. I've always like, I haven't seen everything he's done. He has like, he was a star of TV shows in the 90s that I never saw. Like I can't became known. Well, okay. Kenneth Lonergan became aware of him and cast him in this because of his part in The Wolf of Wall Street. And that scene with him on the boat with Leo and him. What Kenneth Lonergan says is in that scene, Leo thinks he's the smartest guy in the room, but this guy is so much farther ahead of him and he knows, all right, Jordan Belfort, this clown is going to try to hustle me. He's going to try to pay me off to all this stuff. And I'm just this FBI dude taking the subway home in this shitty suit and rocking with that confidence, and that's what. And then Kenneth Lonergan went back and watch Friday Night Lights, all that stuff and was like, yeah, absolutely. I love Kyle Chandler. Yeah, he's very reliable actor. Oh yeah, he's greatness. She's great in it. It's all aggression. Like she's very specific to, this type of person to very believable and then not handling the situation well. Yeah. Very believable as like an agent for chaos. Always fucking up. And then when we see her later, to me, she's just white knuckling that. And it's like all this false thing, like I'm pretending, I don't know, just barely, barely making it through. Oh, I love that scene so much. And again, like the work now we're back here. And that was just the flashback to it. And in that scene, you know, Casey doesn't really, yeah. He doesn't show up in that scene. He doesn't help anything. No, no. And, and. Oh, man, I mean, look at his body language right here. Yeah. His body language throughout his. That's very good. That's where he wears everything in this movie. That's why his performance is so great. It's it's very subtle, but I mean, it's because he's so closed off. It's the way that it bleeds through into other areas, like, like like just this. It's just, And he didn't. Lonergan doesn't strike me as the type of director who's like, all right, go over, see the body, and I want tears, or I want this. It's just go over, see the body and feel whatever you feel. So when he cries here, that was not scripted. It wasn't necessarily planned. And I it's the it's a big room for him at this point. It's a pretty significant release of emotion that you know, he's capable of. Well, and I think it also is is good too. I think it's a great choice, even though it isn't necessarily, you know, I don't think any actor really kind of goes into a scene without that type of thing being like, I don't know, like if the tears come, they just come because they just happen and it's a choice in the moment. But what I think this helps with is like, because he does show this, that just means that every time he bottles it up, he's he's just not allowing himself. We know he's because we now we know he's capable of showing some. I mean, this isn't like heavy emotion. He's not sitting here on his knees screaming, God, this is why. Yeah, but that's a lot for it for him. Yes, yes. And it's big release is going to come after he gets the shit kicked out of him at the bar. And you know, he cries in his friend's wife's lap, essentially. But yeah, right now he's not there. But that was, that was more than this guy's great to this friend. Oh I love this guy. You just feel that he's an actor. But they feel like they just cast this, you know, guy just right to write it down. Oh, yeah. That is his wife. That's right. I forgot she was the nurse. Yeah. Arrangements do not arrangements. Like, it's just the most unnatural frickin thing. Like canceling credit cards. Yeah, reaching out to people and ranting. Oh, my God, informing the most random of people. Oh, I have to let you know that someone's dead. And. And what do we do now? And, answering the same questions, but I just saw. Or how did this happen? What happened? Oh my God. Tears, tears. You have to comfort them. It's sucks. It's fucking sucks when someone really, really close to you dies and you're an active part of that person's life and you have to step up and help out with that stuff. Yeah, it is such a foreign concept. You're like, oh, wow, okay, I didn't I mean, everything from yeah, sending a United Airlines a death certificate so that her credit card can be I'm referring to what I did deal with with my mom. Like can be reimbursed to her car. It's just it's so ridiculous. It's a lot of admin shit that sucks. Yeah. You ever think about it? He, you know, he's playing all this very well, especially when he's in there with the lawyer and the lawyer kind of breaks down like, this is what your brother wanted. My, my, I'm not saying this for any kind of, like, like, sympathy or anything, but my grandma passed away over this past summer, and, when I went back home to be with my uncle and my family, we were having this conversation because it was the day of the funeral service, and somebody called the house, and, and it was someone that was like wanting a payment from something from her, you know, from her life. And, Yeah, my uncle answered the call, and he. And, you know, he's just sort of like, well, unfortunately, you know, she's she's passed and everything, so we're going to take care of that. But then he gets off the phone, he goes, so fucking weird. Yes, we're going to a funeral. I got to see this person. She's dead. Yeah. My dad would be getting calls from collection agencies about my brother for, like, a year, year and a half later. And my dad would be like, he. He's dead. Yeah, yeah. There's, audios. Please don't call again. Yeah, yeah, these are great, too. These. You know, this is, little Lucas Hedges here. Yeah. It's not him, but it's it's territory. Yeah, that's who he's going to grow up to be. Lucas Hedges. And just thinking. Yeah. Adding these in. You know who edited this? Your eyes saying, like, starting all over now, Jennifer Lane, who did it and just won an Oscar for editing Oppenheimer. Oh, amazing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I knew exactly what she was when he said her. Yeah. Very cool. Well, the listeners may not. I know you who's listening to this episode of Manchester, but you see commentary and is not aware that the editor won an Oscar for Oppenheimer. Probably just about everyone, if I'm being honest. You know, you can really start the movie here. Well, initially it did kind of start. Initially, it actually started with him shoveling snow. It did not start with that boat flashback. Yes. And he did that in editing. Just to bring a little depth and ground is a little bit of like where we potentially could be going, okay, brother, nephew, uncle, that type of stuff. Yeah. Your shots really are beautiful. It just looks so smooth. It looks so fucking cold all the time. And, really believe it, like, it just. Oh, my God, it's so cold. And we do have the volume low when we do these commentaries, but we haven't been given like early on when he was dealing with the woman in the apartment. Like there's been some laughs, but it's really like Lucas Hedges. I think he comes in and kind of brings the humor out a little bit, and is the ultra sarcastic stuff. Here's Michelle Williams first scene, if she is. Yeah. Bigger flashback here going. I love when he's like, I didn't even get drunk. I just had like nine beers. Okay. Okay. I mean, it's important. Yeah, he cares about. But he cares about his family. Yes, but he's sloppy. Like he's sloppy. He's a sloppy guy. Yeah, he's a boozer. I mean, look at it. Like, you can even tell by this, like the paint. I mean, you know, it's a painters thing, but still. Yeah, like his shirt's undone and just. Yeah, it just doesn't. Is. There's a mess, though. I don't understand how people do this. Like, she says that she's sick and he just goes right in for the kiss. And, you know, I'm very loving, you know, little thing, but like, hell no, man. Yeah, no, like I ain't let her be. She wants to be left alone. Yeah. I ain't getting close to you. Get the kid out of there. They're going to get sick. Yeah, exactly. Can I get out? Disgusting. I love the I love their relationship, though. It's very like married couple, you know. There he is. He's about to climb into bed. Yeah, but he's defying everything she says. Don't pick her up. Don't wake her up. Yeah. I'm sick, I'm sick. It's it's just great that it's a scene like this that we get a flashback and, like, they're all having fucking ice cream and smiling and laughing and everything, and it's all good and stuff. It's. This is much more human. Look how this clutter this place is. It feels like a house. A house with a bunch of kids. Yeah, a bunch kids. So gross. Well, not for most people, Nick. People like children. Is that the reason why you like this movie so much? Because they fucking die. The kids are the parents. Jesus Christ, she got the dehumidifier on there. Is that a humidifier? I can't tell. I think that's a humidifier, because. Yeah. You want to try and you want to try and get that shit out. Oh, disgusting. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he's getting all those germs. He's really going for it. And, God, is. Is this so much there? Yeah. He probably thinks alcohol cancel the germs out. Or is that they go around your immune system? Exactly, I love this. Don't pick her up. Just put her to sleep. And he's. Yeah, he's kind of like. He's kind of like, just this animal, like this tiny, little jolly drunk animal who just kind of does what he wants and how it's on. And I'll pick her up and, and I'll do this. Give me a kiss. I don't want to. It's a great scene. It is a very good. She's really not in the movie much. I was really is not. It's just going to say, yeah, this is, this is, this has always been the, the the controversy. A bit of this movie is if it is, is this worthy of an Academy Award nomination performance? Lee, you think supporting support, she should have won. She thinks she should have won for this. Yeah. Who the fuck else should have? Well, I don't know who else was nominated, but I don't know. I mean, I think for nominees, one scene theater straight won a fucking Oscar for network for eight minutes. William Hurt is in ten minutes of history of violence. He got nominated. These people don't usually win, but it's a fine nomination. This is a bona fide supporting performance. She is supporting the material. She's supporting him as a lead. I absolutely think she should have been nominated. She's it. She's not in it. When I say she's not in it that much, she still gets like, good scene. She has this scene, the funeral scene, and then even her only scene was the scene of them talking, that five minute scene. I still think she would have been nominated. I do, I do, and yes, I think I would have given her the win for this, would have given her the win. Man, you're crazy. Crazy out here. Oh, it's getting back in. What do you think you got to do? Michelle Williams is nominated for Manchester by the sea. Octavia Spencer, Hidden figures okay. Nicole Kidman, lion. Naomi Harris, moonlight. And this is nonsense. Viola Davis wins for fences, which is absolutely a lead performance that is not a supporting performance. So that is category fraud to me. Viola Davis should have been an actress prop, maybe would have beat Emma Stone for La La Land if they put Michael Davis in actress. Maybe. And then maybe Michelle Williams wins for Manchester. I think it would have went to, Moonlight Naomi Harris, maybe because Mahershala won because the moonlight. She was great in that, but she's barely in it, so thank so you're not. So you're going against my point in it more. She's the mom, right? She's the mom. Yeah. Like the just like three scenes. But they're I'm doing I'm going to fucking look it up and see who's in. Like who has more time. Go, go. We've got to take time. It's going to take our movie. We just strapped in for that. No one's listening. Oh, this is great. People are listening. Michelle Williams is in 11 minutes and three seconds of Manchester by the sea. That is not that much. Naomi Harris is in 12 minutes and 35 seconds of moonlight. It's also not that much. Viola Davis is in 53 minutes and 32 seconds. Offense is. That's a co-lead. Whatever. Screen time, amount of screen time to me doesn't matter. It's presence. It's strength. Oh yeah. If we're talking about leads, it matters. But I mean, even so do you. I mean, do you think Anthony Hopkins should have won for to lambs. He's in it for 17 minutes. And you won lead actor. Of course. Oh you want to lead. Yes. Yes. So there you go. This should just happen sometimes, you know. You know, someone's got to do something. We've been trying. That's all I complain about every Oscar season. They got it right this year for the most part, 2023. I was pleased with. But I mean, the funny thing about Envelope Gate this year, please allow me to kind of break this down, because what happened was that guy was distracted, literally taking a picture of Emma Stone, the guy who's responsible for handing off the envelope. So he gave Bonnie and Clyde their best picture. He accidentally gave them a second Best Actress envelope. They. I think it's pretty. When you open the envelope, it says in the Academy Award for Best Actress goes to Emma Stone, La La Land instead of, like, opening that and Warren Beatty could have gone, you know, there's been a mistake, Faye Dunaway just says, la la land. Now hear me out. If it he would have accidentally handed him a best actor envelope, then they would have opened it and been like, Best Picture is Manchester by the sea, which is produced by Matt Damon. And Jimmy Kimmel was the host of that year's Oscars, and they have their like, fake feud and stuff. Can you imagine? No one would have thought that was fake or an accident, or everyone would have thought that was like staged. But I love that kind of, you know, crossing, sliding doors thing. That would have been way funnier if they open it in. It's like Best Picture. Everyone had been like, well, this can't be right. Yeah. Can you recheck the envelope and get it all together? What got out of there? Like, see the envelope and go, yeah, this is incorrect. Sorry. We're going to sit back down the, we we we breeze right through this scene. But, one thing I love was, you know, because basically that whole entire scene was about Casey Affleck showing up to let Lucas Hedges know that. Is that what's happened? Yeah. And, they do it without actually having any dialog. Yeah, they do that a few times in this. Yeah. You know though, you know, it's like you get you ever get these phone calls from certain relatives. You're like, oh no. But the thing is, the reason why they don't show that is because we already saw that. Well, we saw we get that. So yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. Yeah, but we don't need this over and over and over. But, you know, when Lucas Hedges sees Casey Affleck, he already knows it's trouble. This dude is never around. If he just no call, he just shows up. Something's bad. Yeah. And even his teammates know it, too. Yeah, they're like, oh, shit. And he skates over and he already knows what's about to happen. And that's why I. Whenever I get certain phone calls, I'll be like, I know, I know, but he's dead. Hello? Yeah. Hello. Oh, I love that. Like what? Like you want me to decide for you? For him to, like, go in and see and that. Yeah. See? That's funny. Yeah. That's funny. Like he said, you said just go like I thought you meant. Leave. I can you fucking like. The dynamic is hilarious. He has no idea how to care. He does. He has no idea how to care for himself. No. Just barely. So a teenager? Yeah. With two girlfriends? Yeah. No. And all this, like, could you drive it? Oh, this is great too. Yep. Okay. And and and and you know, and these are the questions though, because I remember when, when, when my dad passed, he had to clean out his apartment and, you know, my family was asking me there, like, what do you want to do? Like, do you want to be there? Do you want, do you want do you want me to make the decision for you? Do you like. And so I love that those are the questions he's asking. Because these are like the real questions that no one knows how to answer. Right. But they need to be asked. Yeah. And it's just one of those things that makes this movie so real. And I again, I think it's why it's comforting in a way like it's just sort of like yep, yep I know all of that. And and it's not playing it. We're not. This movie doesn't really hit you over the head with sentimentality at all. No. Like we're not. No, we're not meant to be like like, swelling with the emotion. Agreed? Agreed. It's just here. It's here, it's real. And we're just dealing with it with no music. For the most part, the classical stuff. But yeah, he. Kenneth Lonergan detests, music dictating emotion. Yeah. He does. He's not a fan of that at all. And I think that lends itself to some of the classical music of, you know, and we only get it like when we're really kind of just getting shots of the, of the, of the, of Manchester by the sea. Yeah. Fucking great guy. I love this and the dynamic with the friends and then the girlfriend's like not into it. It's just. Oh, it plays so well. She's great too. She was in Moonrise Kingdom, right? They were in it together. This girlfriend. Oh my God. Oh yeah. No, that's the girl from, Moonrise. That's what I just said. Yeah. Okay. Oh, he's in it, too. You know. Lucas. Yes. Yeah, yeah. That's right. How do you feel about that? Well, that's the best thing you're gonna learn. That's broken water skiing. Wow. But her, like, she's very real to, like, the, the high school girlfriend is a little just too familiar. Like in the morning, she's gonna put all this. I love this shot piece and beer. You just sitting there, listen to them like, what the fuck? Oh my God. Oh, shut the fuck up. Yeah, that's your hat trick. She shut it down. Look at her. She's like, I don't want to talk about this. And this is also a very real scene, too, because, like, when you're this age, like, your friends will come over and and this is what ends up happening, like, because you're too young, really, to kind of know how to be there for. Yeah. No one in this living room, I think has had their father die. And yeah, you just come over and you're you're trying to hang, maybe make him laugh, and then you get distracted. Now you're arguing about Star Trek like, yeah, this it's very relatable. And it is like, yeah, exactly. And she's like, you shut it down. Time to talking about Star Trek. I was going to say, but maybe also it's. Yes. Exactly. Yeah. Like it's it's this, this is it, this is this is I think the beauty of this movie is like, it's what's right. What's not right. Yeah. Like, like how we're how are we all supposed to proceed in any given situation? And, and that's what I love about the I said earlier about how Casey Affleck, he's like, he's showing up, but he's barely, barely, barely. But he is, though, and and he's actually trying like, I love this. Like, yeah. Yeah. Sylvia McGann I love that, you know, dad was okay with. And he's like, okay. Yeah. But then later on can I invite her over? And he's like, which one is that? That one? No, because you can tell he doesn't like her at all. Like it doesn't like her. Kyle Chandler must have been a pretty cool daddy. I it must have been like your mother is kind of like she's not around much anymore, so he's probably the type of dad that just let him get away with what will or maybe wasn't. Maybe Lucas Hedges is, like, a little bit like Saban is like, maybe. We've had the discussion. This lady is just so like chill about it. Yeah, it's okay if we're having sex. Just, you know, don't worry about it. Just the body language. Yeah, but no one knows what to say to each other. Yep. Drinking a beer, watching the game. Oh, God, it's so relatable. I love their dynamic. And now he gets a little real. Petty. Yeah. Yeah yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Still there? Yeah. Longing for mom. Yeah. And look at that. Well, he's more emotionally connected than Casey Affleck. Absolutely. But he's been dealing with, like, a sick dad, a drunk mom. I mean, he's seen life. Yeah, and here we go. Another flashback that's like, you know, it's. But also another flashback. Not of her. Like, you know, going full woman under the influence or something like screaming all around the apartment, which you've all seen. This is again, this is relatable. Like you come home and mom's straight up passed out on the couch. It's probably a little too early of a time, and I don't want the kid to see this dog shit on the ground. Take him upstairs. Yeah. Look away. Shield your eyes. Shield your eyes and his eye, then. Yeah. And then just like, what the fuck? Yep, yep. Great dynamic they have. Yeah. It's such just, like, such a specific looking house to the production design. This is great. I mean, you can tell there's like this. They're not doing sets here like they're walking into houses and rearranging some stuff and it just feels real. Allowing the clutter, allowing all that. Yeah. It's like these are how these houses look. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. We're back. Yeah. I love that living in it's head space. But it's so interesting what they show him focusing on. Dear. Yeah. I always forget that scene that happens with Matthew Broderick and he like replies that, you know, like dude she's, this would be best if you said your, you know, reach out to me first. Like what? No thanks. Yeah. This is just so awkward. Me her coming down, you know, he's. Yeah. Like, okay, he's making these phone calls we're talking about, like, these awkward but necessary phone calls, pajamas, just. Yeah, the comfort of, like, getting everything set up, and it plays off him so well, like, I am not comfortable in this. Like, why? Oh, yeah. Because, like, here I am. There's this. But he's also like, I'm not leaving. I was your first. Yeah. I'm not going to get up and leave and I'm family. Yeah, exactly. This is actually my house that he's just looking at her like. Like like who are you, little girl? Yeah. Look. It's great. Yeah. She's so. And she's just so comfortable. Yeah. Like. Like, That's what Luke was in line. He's he's had her over. Come. Oh, dad. Daddy! No. Daddy knew what was up. Yeah. And seeing, like. Oh, God. Yeah. Like, this is this is how this goes. Phone calls range. So, I'm just finding out what I need to do. I need someone to explain to me what needs to be done. And then, perhaps for the first time since his tragedy, he's using this current tragedy to kind of think about what has happened. I think that's maybe he hasn't process. Yeah, yeah. Tells him to get up and leave it. It's like, what the hell? I was your first kid. She, like, grabs his arm. Yes. Get away from me. Like that's his focus. Oh, girl, you get it together. Essex. Yeah. You know, three words are in that word. I can think of one sex. Yeah. Good job. Nick, am I right? You nailed it. You got to be there to be there. Everyone's accents I mean I'm no aficionados of accents of this kind. I think we can kind of tell them there are bad ones but they all seem really locked in. I mean some people are from the area, obviously Catholic and stuff, but others are not, and they all work. The, everyone who's like, I was listening to Matt Damon in Catholic talk about, actors who are not from Boston and, and who can actually really they really couldn't think of too many, like, who were good at it that were that truly got it. I, I yeah. Fair because there's, there's, there's a lot of nuances to that accent that just like you everyone descends it up right away. Yeah. And it yes, it is way more nuanced in that. Yeah. And more difficult, I think to do to impersonate. Oh yeah. They did, they did say they mentioned two names of, of people that were like really, really good at. And I forgot who they were. Did you ever hear what Trevon Noah said about Matt Damon? Yeah, Trevor Noah said, because you know, he's South African. He said only good non South African accent in a movie or the best ever without even question is Matt Damon in Invictus. He's like, that is the only reason I'm convinced that Matt Damon was nominated for that performance, because he doesn't do much. But Trevor Noah is like that is exactly. I have no idea how he did that. I have no idea. And that's really cool to hear it. If you ever heard Damon talk about that accent, that it was really hard. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah. Because he says, like, there's just there's certain, like, sounds that your mouth makes and with that accent. Right. That's the shape of your mouth. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So this is. Yeah, we're about 48, 50 minutes into the movie. And now this is a long scene where we're going to get a lot of flashbacks and things are going to be. Yeah, kind of be clear and reveal about why we're here, what Kyle Chandler expects of him. Yeah. Big scene and and also I what I love about this too is like if you're writing where do you put this scene in the movie. Yeah. And and I think, I think there's probably a lot I'd love to ask my script consultant what she thinks, because I've just heard this taste for this movie, but I don't think she would agree with waiting to the 50 minute mark all the way not to put in the reason why we're here. Most people, especially American scripts, would do this much earlier. Yeah. And, and that's what I love about it too, is because this entire time you're asking yourself, why is this dude like this? Yes. And I really do think that because we've elongated when this happens. Because if you put that early, you you accept it too soon. Like you're just sort of like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, but now you're going too long in a okay, I under I understand this already and we know by this point 50 minutes in this is a flawed, imperfect person. If you hit us with this early on and it's like well yeah, of course he's flawed. Yeah. Of course he went through this thing. But yeah, you got to save it for here. And it's not just that that we learn about. It's like this. It's it's like psychology, like it's literally triggering this response within him of your brother wanted you to move here. Yeah. Move back here. Take care of your nephew. You got enough money. You don't have to worry about that. And that's what. That's how he set it up. And now it's triggering this response of, like, this thing. Like, this is why I can't be here. Yeah. And yeah, it's the way you see him just looking out the window in the processing it. And it seems like this lawyer thought, wait, your your brother didn't talk to you about this like I thought you knew this. So he's having to explain it. He's like, I'm I'm not the guy. Like I'm. Yeah. I'm supposed to be gone. It's not me on the back on the faculty. I'm the backup. Yeah. Whoops. This guy's great to. Josh Hamilton love this guy. Yeah. She's knew I'd say no. You're right. Yeah, yeah. This is where they go. But again starting so innocently. Guys drunk late at night. Ping pong pissing off the wife. Tired wife. Yeah. I'm thinking more. Yeah, yeah, I love that. Pinhead. Great one. I also like that right here. We do not see any drugs. See alcohol. But he says later there was a joint being passed and there was cocaine. Two to a dog. It was just imagine this. Look at her. So they're bedrooms in the basement. They're veterans right off of this room. That's what it says.
2:00 in the morning. Jesus, pinhead. Yeah. But I. Yeah, I love that. We're just. You have to bring, you know, you have to accept the fact that there's other stuff going on as he's going to explain to us later. And I just love that that's not explicit. Again, this isn't a movie that's necessarily beating you over the head over and over stuff. Things are explained to us, but it's not like we see him in the cornered bomb and lines of Coke like, and, you know, it's just not how the cutting is going to get much faster. Did you catch that? It was a full moon. What does that signify to you? The danger is a mark that that that this could only like this accident, like, you know, once in a blue moon is. They say that's how often these happen. Until that's actually a lot. Blue moons aren't that rare, I mean, but no, I never picked up on that. They included a shot of a full moon. I mean, I guess it makes it a little easier for him to walk down to that store to get his stuff. But more like that's what's so great is that they don't show us. They don't show us anything with the fire putting the gate up, forgetting, I think any other movie, any other script would come back to that fucking fire. And you see the log roll out and then we go, oh, wow. Oh, boy. And they don't do that. They wait till this brilliant, Oscar worthy monologue that he's going to get when he describes what happens to the cops. This is a really cool, continuity detailed. It gives you a little insight into how Kenny Lonergan thinks, because when they were talking about this scene, they're like, you would be cold walking down there, should be bundled up, your hood would be up. But then as you start walking a little bit, you get a little warmer. Then your hood goes down. Full moon. There it is. Good. Yes. Never miss it. Yes. And full moon blue moon blue. Okay, guys, thanks for offering all that. You know, you're walking, you slow up a little bit, the hood is back up. And then when he's walking back again the hood up down. So yeah, he was explaining all the hood stuff. But now we get our classical music. Yeah. Absolutely. Like you back. Yeah. Yeah. You. Yeah I get hot when I walk in the cold. Yeah, yeah. Like okay. Hood up or down. So I do want to ask you a question, like a serious question, because the first time we saw this, I'm not. So I just said any other movie, most any other movie would show. Like the log rolling out. This goes so far in the opposite direction that we see the house fully fucking engulfed in flames. Yeah. Do you think there should have been anything like we should have seen it a little earlier than that. Like just something because they're going to show us and it kind of comes out of nowhere. Like we don't see anything burning, you know, we don't see any sign of, like, flames, and we don't even see him discover it. We just, like, cut to it. It's not like he turns a corner and then sees it. You'll see what I mean. It always struck me as like, just a little jarring. That's all that, like, it's very, very sharp. But it was strange to me that we don't see him. He's hearing it, of course, but we don't see him discover the fire. We see him after. It's a bullet. There we go. Like he you know, we're seeing the back of him and it's like, oh my God. Like, it's just it's such a huge jump. And again, I think that can be kind of do your script consultant, her line of thinking like a little narratively frustrating because we, we're like we still his audience are like, what the fuck is going on? Because that's exactly what Lee is thinking. Yeah, that's why he is literally one among the spectators here, completely stuck, completely frozen, not knowing what to do, but like, dude, those are. That's your family in there. Yeah, yeah. They actually burned down a house. Like, I had a couple cameras going. Yeah, I mean, I, I think it's very well done like this because, like, when we get that first shot, like like we're in that shock two of like with him, which I think is which I that is why they did it. So I get it I get it. Yeah I'm sorry folks. This thing right here is hilarious. And you and I like, couldn't help but laugh in the theater. There's no other reason to include this than to have, like. I mean, it's funny. It's awkward, it's clumsy, this stuff happens. And this just really happened. They couldn't do it. They couldn't get her, and. And he just includes all of it. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I mean, it's not meant to be funny, like, like, laugh out loud, but that's such an easy editing cut. We could have so easily edited to then lifting up and then putting in. And you can edit around this mistake so, so easily. But he includes it and that is for a reason. There are some whatever. Maybe you don't laugh out loud, but there's some kind of break in tension. Or he was saying that he included that stuff because like when we're watching something like, are we allowed to laugh? Is this okay? And he wanted that. And there's also just like a certain amount of like, like like. That's such a ridiculous thing to happen in that moment. Exactly. And you know, like in that moment in reality two, you're like, fuck these fucking people just lost their goddamn fucking family. We can't fucking get this, like, thing on stretcher up. I know I just told you the story, like last night, but the mad movie buffs don't. Yeah, they don't know. Tell it. It's hilarious. So in high school, my mom was dropping me off. You know, all the kids are entering the school. You know, it's busy. Busy thing. And they're at the front of the school, and I open the door in the passenger side and I step out. But my I have not hit. I have not stepped under the ground yet. And some car hit us from behind. So I do like the somersault roll out and then end up like doing like a full on rotations where my head is now back in the doorway and the frame of the car where the door is slams me in the head and I was okay. Technically that was a concussion, but, I like shot right back up, like, oh my, what the fuck? Yeah. And I go, oh God, I got to sit down. So anyways, because, it was on school grounds, they have to bring an ambulance. So the ambulance comes and I'm still sitting there and, they're they're just sort of like, all right, are we gonna put you on the stretcher? And I was like, no, no, no, no, no, I think I'm alright. Like. And I really did like I was like, I'll get in the ambulance, but I don't think we need a stretcher like I can, I can stand, I can walk. They're like, no, no, no, we're not taking a chance. And I just goes, guys, this really isn't necessary. And so they put me on the fucking stretcher. And then even while I'm like being like they're they're wheeling me to the ambulance, I'm like, it is really we didn't need to do this a bit much. Yeah, yeah. And and and then all of a sudden they try loading me in and like, they can't like that. And I'm laying there. I go I and then all of a sudden I hear whoa, whoa guys guys, guys. We put them on backwards and they literally like bring me down, lift up the stretch board, flip me around, put me down, and then put me back in I go, this all would have been better if you just listen to me. But there you go. Exactly like it. Those things can happen. Like it's, That that is funny. This. Oh my God. And then here we go. This is like, I. This is why I think this in this scene with Michelle Williams is how you win an Oscar. He I mean, my God, he looks hung over. He looks so sad. He looks so defeated, I guess, from in subsequent drafts. He Lonergan cut this scene, this explanation because he thought it was like too much. And Casey was like, absolutely not. We need like, if you're not going to show it like you're saying, like the log rolling out, you have to. You have to have a neck. We you can't be that sparse. Right? This. And it's just so simple of I mean he looks terrible in the way he just sang. That's so defeated. I thought they were going to rest him. We saw it's in there. It it's almost sad. Or that they, like, let him go and he's expecting some sort of, like, comeuppance. Like what? That's it. Yeah. Like, yeah. We're not gonna we're not going to crucify for, like, you made a terrible mistake and there's nothing you can't do or something to arrest. Well, I thought maybe, you know, he's on booze. He admits to being on drugs. Is this could this be, like, manslaughter? Some, like, accidental, I don't know, I, you know, I don't know, but it is. It was just all like an accident that people. You can do it. You can forget to put the gate on the fire. Yeah. It was a great detail when he was in the morning because the way they shot it, they just shot through the night and then waited for the morning. So that was the same morning that they shot it in. And he's still holding the bag of groceries like the chips in the beer. I look like he's, you know, he's like clutching it. It's all he has. But it is kind of shocking and somewhat heartbreaking. Even he is surprised they just let him go. He's like, that's it. Yeah. And, what he, he I think he absolutely wants punishment. Yes, that's what I mean. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Lonergan's like I can't I didn't even I'm not the type of director that directs like this. Look like whatever he's doing this like disheveled like that to him. He just brings it. He totally brings it. The damn hair. And again, not some teary weepy thing where I'm so sorry. Oh, God. Why not? That it's much more grounded. It's much more shock. Yeah. There's horror. Yeah. Guilt. Shame. I feel this shit so intensely when he leaves this office and grabs that damn gun. Yeah. Oh my God. Kyle Chandler sprints towards. Oh, yeah. What a great detail at the safety still on. And he's like really trying to get it off. They need to Screams no please. Like please let me do this to myself. Yeah it is. Go. Oh he did buddy. Think about he hasn't even been asleep. Just think about if you're like that drunk with all your friends. Two drugs, walking like, hasn't been asleep. Lost his kids. I don't do drugs. I'm saying just to put yourself in his headspace of like, this dude is not slept and he's lost everything. Everything, and he's hung over still are coming down off some stuff. I wasn't saying, like you. And the getting up. Oh, God. I want to know how you feel about this cut when he grabs the gun, and then when he puts it to its head, there's a cut. So they're clearly, to me, blending two takes. Is it? Well, I don't think a lot of people notice because it happens so fast. But to me I'm like, do we need that cut? Well, what's your take on the music right here? Because you feel like music doesn't he doesn't use it in the manipulate. I think it's wholly appropriate. We have had music going on terms. Watch this. Cut. Boom. Right. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah yeah yeah. Because the sound. Yeah. And look at him. Yeah. He's like no please. Because. And then we cut out. We should still be in the scene. We all want to be in here. But then he cut boom cuts out. Music is at its crescendo. It's brilliant. I think those that that cut would make such a good cut too as well. You get the sound, but it's also sort of like it's if you were there and you looked up and looked away, and then he looks back and because that's good explanation, brother, that I dig that and because you're not sure exactly of what you see and, and it takes a minute to wash over to process, even if it's a half a second, which Kyle Chandler is like a half a second running. But just great detail like those guns in their holsters have like a button over it. So they have to undo the button to take it out. He doesn't he doesn't do that. But you can tell he grabs it very aggressively to like, get it out of the button and then just doesn't, take safety off. And, you know, it would be great is if the actual explanation was because every time Casey did it, it just didn't look smooth or something. Yeah, sure. You know, like like he's like snoring. Because I just never forget there was one time we were doing there I Go and we scrapped this whole entire thing. But there was a scene where he was, my character was putting me on a record. Yeah, yeah. And, and that's the way that the apartment was, was like, I had to, like, go from my bed to the floor. We had a director cameo right here, Kenny Lonergan. Yeah. Great. Yeah, that happened to him. He said he was chastising his kid in public, and someone walked by and said, great parenting. And he said he lost his fucking mind at the guy. Yeah, and it called out, I love this. It's like dismissive. Yeah. When you look at that coat, like that blue coat, I love it. He plays the preacher pastor and you can count on me. Good actor. Yeah. He's good. Actually shows up. Yeah, I don't I was looking for Margaret, but. Sorry. I just wanted to call that out. Yes. The record player stuff. And we over. We shot the hell out of that. If there are, you know, aspiring filmmakers or filmmakers listening to this, the angle we had chose, you had to get from your bed to the record player. And there are so few steps it doesn't make sense for you to fully, like, get up, erect yourself and stand up and walk. So you were just doing this weird like spider crawl and I went, that's never going to make sense. Like, yeah, it's funny, just looks goofy. And there was no other way. Like I'm like, I'm really just trying to lower myself so I. Can we get to the record player? Yeah. And, so that would have been one of those things where even if we decided to keep all that stuff, it's like, this looks terrible. Yeah. Like, it just doesn't look right. We're, you know, we're going to lose the audience just because you look weird. So be great at that comes because every time I take it out the holster. Yeah, yeah. It up. I'm sure there was something behind it. The thing that you said of even like, you look down, you look back up. Yeah, yeah. But that's where you save it. That's where you make you want to. We're trying to get rid of some kids. Actually. That takes a lot I love it. He's jumps there. Do you want to adopt him? But because you know we've like 15 minutes has gone by when they were in that lawyer's office and we've seen all these flashbacks. So his head that's why they were arguing, you know Kenneth on great parenting. And so his headspace right now is just extremely frantic. The emotional maturity comes from, I think, having a sick dad and a drunk mom, because you have to become, you know, no, not everyone in that situation. But a hypervigilance can come about when you're a kid, always paying attention, always that kind of being on edge and yet increases your emotional intelligence. That's the bitch of life, the hard shit we go through and how we respond to it. That's what makes us who've never gone through anything bad. Good on you. Great. That's great. This was late. This was extremely late in filming and, like, late in the day. And they were in they let him do. He did, like, 3 or 4 takes, and it was getting better every time he's flipping out higher. And then he, he was like, this is your last take. And we're going to go into triple overtime, which is very, very expensive. You're breaking union rules. It cost a lot of money. And Casey Affleck basically went up to the producers who were like off in another room. And they're like, you can't shut him down right now. Like you can't. You have to let him keep going. He will get there. And they did a few more takes. Then this came out and it was not scripted to be this big or this intense and have a really authentic panic attack. I think. Poor kid. I've lived in some tough areas. When you move in no furniture. Have you had to move out of your last place kind of quickly because of whatever. Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah. And you, you don't have like a choice in apartments necessarily. You get an apartment once. It didn't have any windows. Oh, the ceiling was a windows one room. It was just like one room, a studio. And then he does allow to not do that, you know, at least he makes room and sets up arrangements to where this kid doesn't have to leave his life. Yeah, exactly. So he does put someone else first. It's not like he's pocketing this money is going to go live in some damn penthouse in Boston or anything, you know? Yeah, yeah. No, I think this movie is really just like a giant. It's a test. Yeah. For him. And. But what he does is though, is that he he takes it on. Yeah. Yeah. And just because it ultimately comes out the other way where it's sort of like no I'm going back. Like it's, that's what it is. It's, it's in the watching him whether this test. And even though his decisions not exactly like the one that everyone would probably want, it's, it's, it's, it's what makes the movie the movie. It is because you never expect that that that you're just going to. Yeah. Go back and he and he but he tried he did he like I mean you see him talking like hey can you take me on he goes and on the job pretty soon would you try. And then the wife is like I do not want him back and. Yeah. And that's and but that's also like, that's also when you've got like the world telling you no. Yes. And that's when you have to listen. Because sometimes in life like you could want something or you can try for something, but there comes a point where all the signs kind of keep telling, you know, and you're like, all right, maybe, maybe there's a reason for this. So those are his kids pictures. I was going to ask because I think we just saw the edge of one there. I never I don't think we get like a close up, but. Oh, that's also telling that he still keeps those. He still keeps those around. I'm just like, yeah. Just like, man. What am I doing? Yeah, pure pent up. It's all of it. The guilt. The shame. Yeah. This woman that we've never seen, we've never met her before, but she, you know, is working with her husband, maybe running the books and comes up. He's like, no, absolutely not. I know that dude is done, you know. No. What her name is no judgy wedgie. Her name is judgy. Yeah. It's her birth name. No, but she's being, you know, her. The expression. Yes, I've heard it. She's done up her outfits good, but she ain't okay. Yeah, and he's losing it here a little bit brighter. Comes in with a decent save, you know. What do you do in school? Yeah. Yeah. She can't even take a damn lunch with her son in her turf. Yep. And he knows it, too. Yeah, he feels it. Lucas. You mean. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, she's. Looks. Yeah. Like he's very good. See, Lucas is taking it the wrong way. Like, well, not the actor, the character, but like. Like he. Casey as Lee. Lee as Casey was doing an olive branch here, like, hey, you know, she's she's got her. Yeah, she he's actually. And I think he's truthful about it, but I don't think he realizes how shook this was for Lucas because this was not this was Lucas. His way out? Yeah. This was like, hey, you go back to Boston, I'll go live here. And he's. Oh, yeah, he's a fucking email. And it ends perfectly. And and you know what, though? It even makes me think even more that maybe like after that, maybe she, she maybe she flipped out a little bit, maybe not. Went to the booth, but like, had a breakdown or. Yeah, slipped out. And then he's like, I know how to control this. I can do this. Yeah. I had to calm her down and then emails him. Yeah, yeah. I've always kind of thought that I'm not saying like went off the handle, but a flip out of sorts probably. And you know, when you kind of think about it like that, it actually like put yourself in Matthew Broderick shoes. Yeah. If he's just a simple religious guy, found this woman who has been through some crazy shit and then, yeah, he's probably like, and then but say she did go off the rails, like, sure. Like she like like pantless. Yeah. Passed out and he goes, okay, we cannot. This was too much for you, right? You cannot do this. I'm going to handle it now. And if you think about it that way, like it's actually not a dick move. So Matthew Broderick, good guy in the film as I'm just posing closing it. Yes. All right. Well, he it's a movie about death. It's no one's like we said, very beginning. Nothing is just one way. Even here, we're seeing some vulnerability and humanity come through when he's like, you know, what he's done was we could sell those. Yeah, that's a new boat engine. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Let's do it. Yeah yeah yeah. Now they're like, they're getting a little vibe. They're starting to connect. Like, yeah, we can see how it works. I like that idea that Broderick's a good guy. I'm going to I'm going to kind of I'm going to go with that one for a little while. I think he's just a guy who's probably set in his ways and hasn't had a lot of this chaos stuff in his life, and I think he's just. Yeah, but just the way he plays it, it's so you don't really I know, don't know does not seem like a guy that you want to like, spend time with. You watch TV, you know, you don't want to hang out. He's not a good hang. He's not a good hang at all. Probably makes his wife, like, walk behind him. Like when they're in the grocery store. Oh, yeah. He's like, you take your two steps behind me. It's like, look at that smile. Yeah. The first present day smile. There it is. Out on the boat. Out on the water. Maybe it reminds in those times there's, you know, when Patrick was a kid. Well it's also he's away. Like no one can get to him out there. Yeah. He has notice how everything's going. Right. The music's up. It's not classical. Now what's about to happen. Tricking us. Well walking, doing errands. Everything's good. Everything's fine. Who's about to run into. Just walk around town in the music will literally needle drop and stop. Yeah. She's I know, I know, I've wanted to meet her. I've heard good things about her. She just directed her, very first short film. I want to see it. Scenes I've seen two actors do, which I'm getting chills just starts up and it's like, yeah, it's, And how little is verbally communicated. They are not saying she's saying stuff to him, like, you can't just die. And he's just like, no, no, no. Like there's nothing there. There's nothing there. She calls him baby. Oh, God. And it's so her trying to send out this generosity and stuff and like, I'm so sorry. The things I said. You can you imagine what she said to him after that? Like after the, the tragedy. I can't even imagine. And he's like, it's fine. I, I, you know, I deserved it. It's fine. Oh, and the fucking new babies there. But yes, yes she does. Very simple coverage. Y'all had two cameras going at once. They did about 4 or 5 takes of every piece of coverage. It's not much how out of focus the background is. Yeah, it's all about this. And then when we go to the two shot how like the wall is splitting. Yeah it's all it's simple but it's effective. Yeah. And he can't even look at her. No. Yeah. This is how you. It's how you win an Oscar. This certainly helps. Yeah. I'm like, so, like, shattering. Just the way he plays this. And his voice starts to crack. I don't want to just watch it. We got to talk. You know, I know, I know. Oh, because people probably are watching it with audio. They're just listening to us. So just like I'm. I'm just thinking about, like. Like, I don't know when he says if there's nothing there, he says it at the end with nothing there, but I don't I don't know that, there's nothing there means that there's like, he's hollow. I just think there's so much that he just can't like. There's too much. I can't do it. He's a well, I can't beat it. Yeah, he's a human being. We've seen him cry. We've seen him laugh. But there's nothing there. And way he. I don't think when this movie ends for the rest of his life, I don't know if he's ever going to open himself up to love again. Yeah. And even having lunch with her, he's opening it. It's it's opening that door. It's opening. We're going to talk about stuff. We're going to cry. We're going to grieve. We're going to, you know, heal together. And he it's just shut down. He can't do that. There's no intimacy. There's no love. He understands what she's saying. But I honey oh my God. I oh my God. Just he's so inarticulate verbally, but yeah, he's communicating everything. Can't look at her. No. Yeah. He lives off of her anger at him. He lives off that. That drives him. He deserved all that stuff that was said to him that that's his thinking years later. Yeah. There's nothing there like I see I don't know man. Like there's some, there's always been a part of me that like that I'm not. That's nothing. There's meant like so much more. It's like it's what he wants her I think he wants to. It's in him. He's like I want probably nothing more than this. I would love this sort of resolve, but I just. But I can't do it. I can't do it. And by saying there's nothing there, it's shuts down. It shuts it down because clearly everything is there. Yeah, yeah, everything is there. Oh, and here we go. And this is what he knows. He knows he can go to a bar and and slug a few. And some guy go into the bathroom, accidentally bumps you on the shoulder, which happens at every bar you ever go to. And then he just swings here he comes. And here's his friend. This is great how it's broken up. And then all these extras, these were stunt guys. They were, you know, directed to take Casey down, and they couldn't I couldn't get him down. And he was fighting them off and everything that got him, you know, got him down. I love this. He picks a guy who's going to be one final hit. Yeah. And then he. It's so believable when, Casey gets hit, how he gets knocked out with one punch, you'll see his eyes go up. Oh, no. Watch it. Boom! Right there. Yeah. That's. That is such a believable knockout. Yeah. When you're out on your feet and you just fall over, boom. Oh, I seen so good. I also another point of correction I think like way a long time ago, I thought the nurse in the hospital was this guy's wife. So I got that wrong. I got that wrong. So I just want to call that out because she, you know, we saw her at the, the funeral kind of reception thing, you know, just need food and stuff. And this is just a great scene. It's good that it's good that you corrected your mistake. I do that often. Yeah, because that's the type of person I am. You know, I never make mistakes. Exactly. So that's the difference between you and I? Exactly. I make them an account for them. You have no accountability. Because I don't make them right. I'm perfect. Right. Okay, you get in there, kid. Yeah, sure. Yeah, sure. Jackass. Yeah. Do you ever see that SNL skit with Casey? With the Dunkin Donuts? Oh, my God, he's got the cigaret out the window. Yes. Perfect. Cut your nails, for God's sake. Got it. Perfect, perfect. So he's like, dude, is order what? You. Oh my God. Yeah. And then this is, you know, maybe a little drunk. Yeah. Definitely beaten up. Well, this is it just collapses. Well, I mean it's he's still feeling the emotion from from Michelle. It's all, it's all Michelle. It. Well it that was just the ultimate straw that breaks the back of the camel. Yeah. This is the first time he's been back there. He's gone out like, made a scene and gotten hammered and picked fight and all that shit. And it's also like, you know, like the fact that he's trying and that like, and it's not work and it's and it's not working and it is in some way, like in some ways it's working with with Lucas, what's his name. And I keep saying Patrick. Patrick. Yes. And it's just. That it's so hard and you just feel that. Yeah. Nothing can be said here. Yeah. Yeah. Just to just to pat, like, you know, he's a fuck up. He's a in some ways Patrick is more mature than him. Oh yeah. Yeah absolutely. But I don't I don't know if he's a fuck up I understand. Fuck Lee is not a fuck up. He's just intentionally keeping himself in this emotional stasis and he is not allowing himself to advance. So when you do that and when you are not letting any sort of intimacy or love in, it's this pattern, pattern of destructive behavior. So he's not a fuck up. I think he has the skills, the intelligence to change his life and do pick his life back up. He is actively choosing not to. Yes. So he's keeping himself in this. You. I don't think he was just born a fuck up. He's a smart guy who knows like his way around life, but he has made some mistakes and he's choosing to live in that world, in the world of the mistake. And see, this is where he won't leave him alone. Yep. Taking care of each other. Yeah. Yeah. And no judgment either. Oh, yeah, I love that. No thanks buddy. He literally just followed him all the way around the house. Doing for him what he did for him. Yeah. And he reckons like that's what's so great is like, everything is just so truthful. Like, there's no, like, oh, this is, this is very effective. It's the only time this movie does. It's a kind of dream sequence with his daughter. Oh, yes. Dreaming. And then she wakes up, and then he's woken up from a smoke alarm. Yeah, yeah, it's. Oh, man. Yeah. That kid's dead. Yep. Not in real life. Well, let's hope not. Well, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So they're happy and healthy and having great careers. But those little girls, I mean, it's been ten years. They might. That's what I'm saying. That's what I mean. Yeah. Oh, this is awesome. That's just not got to be, like, triggering, right? I mean, you're talking chicken in the freezer. What about. Yeah. Keeping the damn falling asleep when the damn stove's on. Yeah. Watch out here, buddy. Oh, man. It's so like. So like you could barely see anything. It wasn't like it didn't look dangerous. Like it wasn't like there was like a fire, but just that smokiness. Sure. And this is another thing the movie will do where, you know, this is this one, the screen. There's Oscar for best original Screenplay. We don't hear any dialog here. Yeah. And it's going to be explained to us later what this is about. And it's just so I mean, you know, whatever he's saying here, they buy it and they get it and they're like, okay, well this is him coming clean. Like because they're the only he's I can't eat it like like guys you you have literally seen me at my worst. I'm not I cannot live here. So yeah. But it's also like what do we need to do something. Yeah, that's what I'm asking. And here we go. His fucking body language leaning forward. Oh my God. I'm. He's kind of accepted it. Yeah. None. You know. No. Yeah. He's getting everything he wanted. Yeah. Yup. Got it all figured out. Here's like everything. Yeah. Just like we talked about the kids getting pretty much everything you wanted. He's just losing his uncle. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. Yeah yeah. And now they've come all this way. And he doesn't even want that. Oh it's such a big deal. It's such a big deal at that age. Yeah, yeah. He's like 17, 16, 17. It's just it's just legality. Yeah. It's all it is. Yeah. And that's he's still leaving him the decision. Yeah. This I'm not telling you this. Yeah. Do you want this. And like why can't it be you bud. Yeah. Man I know it's just so sad. Look at his fucking body language. Just like before. Yeah. Perfect line of dialog. It's just truth. It's all it is. Oh, Jesus Christ, there it is. I got goosebumps. That's the first time he acknowledges it openly. What? What he's done like in the present. It like. And he knows what he's talking about. You know, Patrick knows what he's talking about. Yeah. That's why he doesn't say anything like he's he's known it all. Of course. Of course. But it's just that's the first time we hear him admit just all of it. All the thing. And. Yeah, of course, the most physically, you know, vulnerable. They're being together. Yeah. It's just great that they've gone, they've come this far and then they have this genuine love for each other. I'm going to fucking could. He still can't. Yeah. He still can't do it. This is why this movie is great. You laugh, you cry. I love this movie. Great. Great film. Man. I seen it like, 12 times. Have you? I've seen it a lot. I put this on. You've done it with me. And the few times, like I. I've a few movies that unfortunately, they're all streaming movies because they're just there. But it's the movies that like this lives on Amazon Prime. Yeah, it's an Amazon. That's exactly right. So like The Irishman for me, I can put this. I'm like, oh, I got 20 minutes ago, put down the killer is another one for me. It's just a movie where it's sort of like, show it. I gotta leave the house in a little while, but I just want to put something on. This is a movie that I just put on, and then when I come back, I'm like, oh, I'll pick it up where I left off. I just, I don't know, there's something that's just very comforting about this movie to me. I think it's just it understands, man. Yeah. And I think it's just it's just that truth that's why I mean, it understands life. It gets it. Yeah. It's real. And. And this guy. Yeah, it's telling the story. And on a tuna boat. And that's what he's. That's what basically Cassie's doing. Yeah, that's his journey. This is Odyssey. No one ever knows what happened to him. See, I hope that I hope, I hope not for that. For Lee. Like. I do too I that is one of the great mysteries of the script and of the movie. What? What of it now? Does he go? I mean, they seem like they have such, such, like a good connection. How does he go back? It's only whatever 30, 45 minutes away. Does he go see or an hour and a half to go see him much? Does he? I come into the house. Is he the landlord of the house? Because they said they're going to rent the house out. So is he like, no, I doubt it. I'm sure that's all George's responsibility. I don't know, I think if I was really to kind of like, see what I think happens is that I bet he comes back for holidays. Okay. And maybe every once in a while, if there's something that needs to come back to. I think he's very much still in Lucas Hedges his life. Sure, sure. Because I don't think that Lee wants that bond to go away. I agree, and so but he's just his life is back in in Boston, but I don't think he does anything with it. I don't I don't either. I think he's like a janitor for the rest of his life. And that's what I like. Like I want for him to find another woman. We all do. I can just, like, smile. And, you know. The. Finally able to get his dad in the ground. Yeah. Not the hard, not his body, but. Well, I guess that too. But at the ground. Ground stalled out. Enough. Here it is. The ball. Yeah. It's just the thing that they were doing. It's. Yeah, like, I mean, I think it works like I think it could have been one of those things where it's like, you know what, let's go with it. Yeah, yeah. Maybe they even that last shot would be like play around with the ball. Sure. Yeah, sure. Everything you need to know about Manchester by the sea. I swear to God, I read something like that once. Ridiculous. Slow fade out. Oh, fade out. Here they are. That's our movie. What if? God, I love it so much. You know what? What? I'm not saying I'm going to put this in there, but I got to rethink my top ten. Of what? All time. Of all time? Yeah, sure. Think about it. I know I've made a change in there already, but I think I need to go back and really look at it and really and and think about, well, it might needs to change the top 25 of the century so far to be this, you know, investigate that first before you go to the big one, the big top ten. Yeah. True true true. This is absolutely eligible. Yes. God I can't wait for that episode. It's going to be such a that's such a it's going to be great. Did people know about this place? I do no other, movies in production, as far as I know. For Kenneth Lonergan, he wrote, Howards End, which was like a mini series for something. I didn't see it. He didn't directed, but he wrote it. But. Yeah. Noah, it's just it's these three movies you can count on me, Margaret. Manchester by the sea. He'll do another one. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I mean, he still writes plays. So yeah he's a, he's a busy guy. Love, love that though I love, I love when they're writers and, and directors of theater that really make their name in that right arena. Go to film because there's, there's especially with a guy like Kenneth Lonergan. They're all very contained. Yeah. Yeah. Like there's like a margaret's probably the one that's the most, the biggest. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, if you're good, I'm good. I feel like we got a, we got, we got to end on, something funny name. That's usually what we do. Pick a funny name. Go venti. Half tea, half tea, half dick. Wait. That was. No. Then there for the thin red line was best. No, I cut the black. There's got to be more. They got to do music. They got to do. And you know, we actually talked a lot more about the, the movie in, in ways that we don't sometimes see the other ones. It's true, it's true. Yeah. Kind of honed in on it. Yeah. Both seen it a lot. That's you know, that's one thing. Sure have sold together for the first time. So you know, we're able to talk about that red letter day. Great stuff.
